Palm Beach State Sophomores Getting Interest

by Alex Schwartz

On Saturday afternoon I made my way to Davie, Fla. for a Sunshine State JuCo showdown between Broward County College and Palm Beach State College. The contest was close for a half and then a loaded Palm Beach State team took over in the second half.

Palm Beach State went on to win 94-53 over Broward County and had a number of players turn in big performances. Liberty-signee Juan Coronado was the most impressive player on the floor, as the rugged post player scored 18 points and made his presence felt from start to finish for the Seahawks. Former Miami Hurricane and current South Alabama-signee, Antoine Allen, had 17 points in the victory and hit four 3-pointers.

South Florida-signee Waverly Austin, a center who originally committed to USF in high school was heavily recruited before recommitting to the Bulls, had 11 points. Ex-UMass guard Daryl Traynham had 15 points and knocked down three shots from beyond the arc.

For Broward County, the top player was Craig Brown, who redshirted last season at Lynn, a Division II program. He scored 23 points and had three nice dunks as well as a 3-pointer. Alen Hardy added 11 points from the point guard spot.

After the game I had the opportunity to speak with Palm Beach State College assistant coaches Murray Jones, Judson Stubbs and Brian Mullican to discuss the recruitment of a few players on the team.

Daryl Traynham (pictured on left), who spent a semester at UMass, is being recruited by a handful of schools right now. The 5'8 point guard from Maryland currently has Canisius, Western Kentucky and Morgan State looking at him. Traynham is a diminutive lead guard with a superb handle, quality floor vision, great quickness, and a nice stroke from deep.

As for Chris Cantino, a 6'7 power forward from the Philadelphia area, coach Jones said, "A lot of schools [are] calling." The coaching staff specifically mentioned Iona, South Alabama, Canisius, Old Dominion, Jacksonville, Idaho State, and Seattle as schools involved right now. Cantino is a player with a nice build and good length who can help out in the frontcourt.

Ray Gatling, a 6'2 shooting guard who hails from Maryland, has Norfolk State taking a look at him at this point. He is a kid who can knock down the 3-point shot.

Finally, 6'4 Floridian shooting guard Demetrius Allen, has a number of  non-Division I programs on his trail. Allen, who is a quality marksman from beyond the arc, is being looked at by Armstrong Atlantic (DII), Valdosta State (DII), Cumberland (NAIA), Palm Beach Atlantic (DII), and Columbus State (DII), amongst others. A coach from Palm Beach Atlantic was at the game to see Allen, according to the Seahawks coaches.

In addition to the sophomores, Palm Beach State also has a couple of well-known freshmen on the team. Kevin Thomas, a 6'7 small forward, was ranked #146 in the D1 Hoops Report Class of 2011 Top 150 and signed with Texas, but did not qualify. Coach Mullican said Thomas is no longer committed to the Longhorns.

The Seahawks also have 6'3 shooting guard Mike Cheatham who signed with Marshall in 2011, but he did not qualify either. Coach Mullican said Cheatham is not committed to the Thundering Herd anymore.
