Ikenna Iroegbu Disucsses Recruitment
by Alex Schwartz
Although the class of 2012 has a weak crop of point guards, the group in 2013 is one to look forward to. One of the floor generals in that junior class is
Ikenna Iroegbu of Oak Hill Aacademy (VA).
The 6'0 point guard is ranked as the #49 player in the Northstar Basketball Post-July 2013 Top 80. Northstar Basketball recently caught up with the California native to discuss his recruitment.
Iroegbu said that he has received scholarship offers from Washington State, Arizona, USC, Colorado, and Oklahoma State. In addition, he is garnering interest from Stanford and Virginia Tech.
"Not really," Iroegbu said by text message of whether he has any favorites. "It's mostly mutual but I did take an unofficial visit to Stanford was impressed with what I saw."
Iroegbu said he trip to the Pac-12 program came on January 2nd and he talked about what he impressed him about the school.
"I really liked how the team practiced and how coach [Johnny] Dawkins coached the team while they were practicing," Iroegbu said, "and of course the fact that they have a beautiful campus."
Stanford is not the first school to host Iroegbu on an unofficial visit, as he has also tripped to a trio of others in the Pac-12.
"I visited USC, UCLA and CAL over the summer," Ireogebu said. "Those were all great visits [and] they all went well."
Iroegbu said that he does "Not really" have a timetable for a commitment and added that he will make his pledge when he feels the time is right.
The talented lead guard went on to provide some insight into what he is looking for in college.
"Coaching staff, the location and the atmosphere during a game," Ireogbu said. "I would like [to attend] a school where the fans and student sections go crazy."
By location, does Iroegbu mean proximity to home or rather what is around the school itself?
"A little bit of both," he said. "I would love [to attend] a school close to home but [I also] wouldn't mind going to a school out east since I'm already doing that for high school."
Speaking of high school, Iroegbu explained what this season at Oak Hill Academy has been like for him thus far.
"It's been a great season," he said. "I feel blessed to be around a great group of guys and that we're #1 in the country..I think if we continue to work hard and keep doing what [we are] doing as a team we can go undefeated all season."
In addition to winning a whole lot of basketball games, Ireogbu has been adjusting to life at the school in Mouth of Wilson, Va.
"On the court I've learned how to play with players that are just as good as myself and how to be a better PG," Ireogebu said. "Off the court I've learned that you always have to watch what you say because someone might take it the wrong way if [you are] not careful."
In conclusion, Iroegbu remarked, "life is good on the Hill [and we are] just doing our best to win a national championship."
