Two Athletic Top 30 Juniors Make Commitments

by Alex Schwartz

Although much of the
focus is on the class of 2012 right now, as its members inch towards the completion of their prep careers, Friday was all about the juniors. Two players ranked in the Northstar Basketball Post-July 2013 Top 80 made verbal commitments less than a week into the new year.

First, in the afternoon it was No. 30 ranked Aquille Carr (pictured on left) of Patterson (MD) who popped to the Seton Hall Pirates. Northstar Basketball confirmed the news, which was unclear at first, with a source close to the situation. The Baltimore native also considered

Then, this evening, per multiple reports, No. 26 ranked Derrick Griffin of Terry (TX) pledged to the in-state Texas A&M Aggies. Griffin (pictured on right), a big-time football player as well, is reportedly heading to College Station on a football scholarship, but plans to play basketball as well.

Carr and Griffin are similar players in one way, so it is interesting that they pledged on the same day. Both of them are undersized for their positions, but make up for a lack of height with absolute elite athleticism and incredible leaping ability. Carr, a 5'7 point guard, and Griffin, a 6'6 power forward, are two of the very best pure athletes in the nation regardless of class.

With the commitments from Carr and Griffin, now exactly one quarter of the 2013 Top 80 are off the board. Eight of the 20 committed players are ranked between No. 11 and No. 30 on the list.

Carr and Griffin are the only ranked juniors bound for Seton Hall and Texas A&M, respectively. In addition, they are both the highest ranked players headed to their respective conferences, the Big East and the SEC.
