Seventeen Top 150 Players Commit During Two Week Span
by Alex Schwartz
Talk about a hectic couple of weeks in the basketball recruiting world. Over the past two weeks, a whopping 17 players from the Northstar Basketball Post-July 2012 Top 150 have made college decisions. Here is the rundown on those 17 commitments, five of which went to non-BCS programs.
It was 6'4
shooting guard Sherron Dorsey-Walker (pictured on left) of Pershing (MI) who began the commitment spree back on Monday, September 19. The nation's #70 ranked player committed to the Iowa State Cyclones, in news broken by Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com.
Twymond Howard, a 6'6 small forward from Pearl (MS), became one of the top players to commit to UTEP in recent memory. A major pickup for Tim Floyd and Co., Howard is the #89 ranked player in the class of 2012 and his commitment was broken by Scout.com's Evan Daniels.
The best player to commit of late—in fact, he is the highest ranked committed player in the 2012 class—was Kyle Anderson of St. Anthony's (NJ). A unique talent as a 6'8 power forward/point guard, the nation's #5 ranked player selected the UCLA Bruins over fellow finalists Florida, Georgetown, St. John's, and Seton Hall. The news was first reported by Jerry Meyer of Rivals.com.
Sylvan Hills (AR) star Archie Goodwin ended his recruitment much earlier than expected when he pledged his services to John Calipari and the University of Kentucky. The #9 ranked player in the class of 2012, Goodwin chose UK over Arkansas and Memphis. Brooks Hansen of Memphis Roar broke the news of the 6'5 shooting guard's decision.
The #18 ranked player in the nation, Perry Ellis, announced his intentions to attend Kansas at a press conference on Wednesday, September 21, per multiple reports. One of the most decorated players in Kansas basketball history, Ellis went with the Jayhawks over
Kansas State, Kentucky and Wichita State. The 6'8 power forward attends Wichita Heights (KS).
Notre Dame, once seemingly of the picture of Zach Auguste, ended up landing a commitment from the 6'9 power forward from New Hampton (NH), per multiple reports. Auguste is the #130 ranked player in the Northstar Basketball Post-July 2012 Top 150.
Elijah Macon (pictured on right), ranked #96 in 2012, committed to West Virginia before his sophomore year of high school even got underway and later reopened his recruitment. Things ended up coming full circle when the 6'9 power forward/center recommitted to the Mountaineers on Friday, September 23. It was Brian Snow of Scout.com who had the news that the Huntington Prep (WV) prospect was once again off the board.
On the same day that Notre Dame landed Auguste and West Virginia picked up Macon, Stanford received a commitment from Christian Sanders. A 6'3 shooting guard out of Saint Thomas (TX), Sanders is the nation's #110 ranked player. Rivals.com's Eric
Bossi had the news of his pledge to the Cardinal.
Tyler Cavanaugh (pictured on left) was the next top 150 player to make his commitment, as the 6'8 power forward out of Jamesville-DeWitt (NY) surprised some by pledging to Wake Forest. Cavanaugh is the #128 ranked player in the 2012 class and his commitment was first reported by NBE Basketball Report.
Heard This Blog had the news that 6'6 small forward Jodan Price of Detroit Country Day School (MI) had popped for the DePaul Blue Demons. Northwestern was another school seriously in play for the nation's #144 ranked player in the class of 2012.
Hopkins (MN) standout Siyani Chambers opted to go to the nation's most prestigious academic conference, selecting the Harvard Crimson out of the Ivy League, per CBSSports.com's Jeff Borzello. A 5'11 point guard, Chambers is ranked #149 in the Northstar Basketball Post-July 2012 Top 150.
Houston continued putting together a big-time recruiting haul by adding the #113 ranked player in the 2012 class, Valentine Izundu. A 6'10 center out of Cy Lakes (TX), Izundu is somewhat of an unknown, but is a terrific shot blocker with great upside. His commitment to the Cougars was broken by RCS Sports.
One-time St. John's commitment Jevon Thomas of Quality Education Academy (NC) committed to Dayton, per ZagsBlog. Ranked #102 in the class of 2012, the 5'11 point guard from New York City also
considered schools such as Penn State and Seton Hall.
At one point, 6'4 shooting guard Rodney Purvis (pictured on right) was committed to the Louisville Cardinals, but he ended up reopening his recruitment. Now he is back off the market, announcing his decision on Friday, September 30 to attend his hometown school, North Carolina State. The Upper Room Christian Academy (NC) star is ranked as the #6 player in the 2012 class. It was Jerry Meyer who first reported that Purvis was bound for NC State over his other suitors, namely UConn.
Wake Forest picked up its second top 150 prospect of the last two weeks when Arnaud Adala-Moto surprised some by pledging to the Demon Deacons yesterday, per Jeff Borzello. Ranked #72 in the class of 2012, the 6'5 small forward out of Episcopal (VA) selected Wake Forest over schools such as Miami and Vanderbilt, amongst others.
