Five Top 100 Players Off The Board in Under 48 Hours
by Alex Schwartz
With in-home visits and official visits having been taking place for a number of weeks already, class of 2012 prospects are flying off the board left and right. In fact, in the last day and a half, four top 100 prospects have committed and another one is set to announce his decision later today.
The best of the bunch to announce lately was the nation's most versatile player, Kyle Anderson (pictured on left), a 6'8 power forward
/point guard out of St. Anthony's (NJ).
Late Monday night via Twitter, Anderson announced his intentions to attend UCLA soon after Rivals' Jerry Meyer reported it. He selected the Bruins over Florida, Georgetown, St. John's, and Seton Hall. Anderson is ranked as the #5 overall player in the Northstar Basketball Post-July 2012 Top 150, but with Andre Drummond rejoining the 2011 class, he is truly at the four spot on the list.
Anderson is the highest ranked committed player in the class of 2012 and the only top five player who is off the board. He is now part of a three-man recruiting class for Ben Howland that also features #57 Jordan Adams, a 6'5 small forward from Oak Hill Academy (VA), and #79 Dominic Artis, a 6'0 point guard out of Findlay Prep (NV).
UCLA was ranked #16 in the Class of 2012 Team Recruiting Rankings- September Edition, but in adding Anderson the Bruins are now second to only Pac-12 foe Arizona.
Joining Anderson as top 10 players to pledge since the business week started back up is Archie Goodwin, a 6'5 shooting guard out of Sylvan Hills (AR). The
nation's #9 ranked player—without Drummond he is #8—Goodwin tweeted late Tuesday night that he had committed to Kentucky not long after Memphis Roar's Brooks Hansen broke the news.
The other finalists for Goodwin (pictured on right) were Arkansas and Memphis, while UConn and Kansas were also considered. John Calipari now has a top 15 recruiting class despite the fact that Goodwin is the only member of UK's 2012 haul thus far. The top 10 recruit bumps the Wildcats up that high by himself.
The #70 ranked player in the Northstar Basketball 2012 Top 150, 6'4 shooting guard Sherron Dorsey-Walker of Pershing (MI), made his college choice on Monday evening. According CBSSports.com's Jeff Goodman, the Detroit native selected the Iowa State Cyclones.
A talented scorer, Dorsey-Walker is the second top 75 commit for Fred Hoiberg and ISU, joining #73 Georges Niang, a 6'7 power forward out of the Tilton School (NH). ISU also has a pledge from 6'4 small forward Nkereuwem Okoro of St. Raymond's (NY).
In adding Dorsey-Walker, the Big 12 program goes from unranked to having a top 25 recruiting class headed to Ames this fall.
The other top 100 player to decide in the past couple days was Twymond Howard, a 6'6 small forward from Pearl (MS). Scout's Evan Daniels broke the news that Howard had committed to UTEP, the school he visited this weekend.
Howard is the #89 ranked player in the class of 2012 and is a major coup for Tim Floyd and the Miners. He joins a quality three-man recruiting class that
also includes 6'7 small forward Anthony January of Taft (CA) and 6'5 small forward Dwayne Benjamin of Northside (LA).
Later today, Perry Ellis (pictured on left) will become the third top 20 player and fifth top 100 player to commit in less than 48 hours. The #18 ranked player in the Northstar Basketball Class of 2012 Top 150, Ellis has a press conference scheduled for 2:45pm EST.
The 6'8 power forward out of Wichita Heights (KS) is the three-time defending Gatorade State Player of the Year in Kansas. He has a final group that includes Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, and Wichita State.
