Northstar Basketball Post-July 2014 Top 20
For the first time, Northstar Basketball will rank players in the class of 2014. Nearly two months ago the Pre-July 2014 Top 40 Watch List was released, but the players were not in any order. Now, the nation’s elite sophomores are ranked one through 20 below.
The class of 2014 has the makings of an extremely strong group. The headliner of the class and the #1 ranked player is Andrew Wiggins, a high flying 6’7 small forward from Huntington Prep (WV) by way of Ontario. The best non-American to attend a US high school since recent #3 NBA Draft pick Enes Kanter matriculated to college in 2010, Wiggins is arguably the best Canadian prospect ever.
Narrowly beat out for the #1 spot was Jahlil Okafor, a 6’10 center from Whitney Young (IL) who checks in at the two spot. The Chicago native is a superb low post scorer and is surprisingly nimble for his size. The other player who was considered for the top spot is Emmanuel Mudiay, a 6’4 point guard out of Grace Prep (TX). The #3 ranked player in the class, Mudiay has an impressive blend of size, vision, athleticism, and scoring ability.
At #4 is another point guard in 6’1 Tyus Jones of Apple Valley (MN), who is the consummate floor general with an incredible feel for the game. Jones can really distribute the ball, but he is also a terrific scorer with a knockdown 3-point shot. He and Mudiay are two of the top three point guards in the nation regardless of class, along with Andrew Harrison, the #5 ranked player in the 2013 Top 80.
Theo Pinson, a 6’5 small forward from Wesleyan Christian Academy (NC), checks in at the #5 spot in 2014. Possessing great length and athleticism to go along with the ability to hit from beyond the arc, Pinson has terrific upside. It was tough to keep 6’10 center Dakari Johnson out of the top five, but the New York native sitting at #6 shows the quality of the class. The recent Montverde Academy (FL) transfer is a true low post player who is comfortable around the basket.
The only committed player on the list, Indiana-bound 6’8 power forward Trey Lyles of Arsenal Technical (IN), is another high-level player and part of a big-time top seven in the class. The rest of the top 10 is not shabby at all, though. Wayne Selden, a 6’4 shooting guard from the Tilton School (NH), is ranked #8 and is followed by 6’8 small forward Noah Vonleh of New Hampton (NH) at the nine spot and then 6’8 power forward Chris McCullough of the Salisbury School (CT) at #10.
Those 10 players are considered the five-star prospects in the class of 2014 right now, but as time goes on more players will receive the honor. The other 10 players on the list are considered four-star prospects. More notes can be found at the bottom of the page. In addition, I would like to thank CBSSports.com's Jeff Borzello, my partner in D1 Hoops Report, for lending a bit of a hand in the rankings.
Without further ado, have a look at the players who make up the Northstar Basketball Post-July 2014 Top 20.
