Four More Recruiting Updates from the Nike Peach Jam
by Alex Schwartz
Wrapping up our coverage of the 2011 Nike Peach Jam/EYBL Finals, here are recruiting updates on four more players that Northstar Basketball spoke with in North Augusta, S.C.
Huntington (LA) standout Mike Qualls is one of the most athletics players you are going to find. The 6’5 class of 2012 small forward showed off his athleticism for Louisiana Select down at Peach Jam.
Qualls said that he holds scholarship offers from LSU, Ole Miss, UTEP, Jacksonville, Louisiana Tech, and UT-Chattanooga. In addition, he said he is hearing from Texas A&M, Oregon, Northwestern, Arkansas, Colorado, Southeastern Louisiana, USC, and others.
At this point Qualls said that he does not have any favorites. Part of that might be because he said he has yet to take any unofficial visits.
“All of them are recruiting me about the same,” Qualls said of whether any school is coming at him the hardest.
James Woodard, a 6’3 class of 2012 shooting guard out of Edmond Memorial (OK), is receiving interest from a number of colleges. Although the Athletes First standout does not yet have any offers, he said that Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Oral Roberts, Vanderbilt, Missouri State, Wichita State, and Liberty are all involved in his recruitment.
“Not really, but . . . probably between OSU, Tulsa, OU, and Vanderbilt probably,” Woodard said of his favorites at this point.
Woodard has taken unofficial visits to three of the schools on his list, having tripped to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tulsa.
“I plan to go back to OSU and Tulsa for sure right now,” Woodard said of what other visits he will be taking.
Asked who is recruiting him the hardest, the rising senior responded, “I would say Tulsa.”
Woodard’s younger brother, Jordan, is a talented 2013 prospect. Although James said they have discussed attending college together, he is “not sure” whether they will end up doing so.
Although he stands just 5’9, class of 2013 point guard Marquan Botley is a talented player. Botley, who attends Prestonwood Christian (TX) and runs with the Texas Titans, does not yet have any offers, but he does have some college interest.
Botley mentioned Marquette, Tulane, Baylor, and Iowa as the schools who have his eye the most.
“Those are the ones that I’m most interested in and are interested in me,” Botley said of the four schools.
The other schools Botley said are recruiting him are Santa Clara and Creighton. He does not have a leader at this point.
“I’ve visited Tulane and I went—I visited Baylor, I went with my school team,” Botley said of his trips thus far.
Asked whether he has any trips planned, Botley replied, “I would like to visit Martquette. I haven’t scheduled it yet, [but I] have to get down there.”
An undersized power forward at 6’6, class of 2013 prospect Corbyn Jackson is a player who just produces for the Boo Williams U16 squad. Jackson, who attends Goochland (VA), does not yet have any scholarship offers.
In fact, he surprisingly said that Virginia Tech is the only school that is involved in his recruitment to date. Jackson said that both he and his coach have spoken with a coach from the ACC program.
“I wanted to go to Kentucky,” Jackson said of his dream school, “but my number one dream school—someone told me to be a big fish in a little pond—is VCU.”
