Upshaw & McCormick Picking Up Interest
by Alex Schwartz
In addition to their basketball abilities, both Robert Upshaw and Kellen McCormick both have something that college coaches love: size.
At 6'11, with a strong 255-pound frame, center Robert Upshaw is taller and stronger than just about any high school big man he is going to face.
Kellen McCormick checks in at 6'8, but as a high school small forward, that spells a big-time mismatch.
Although both players remain open in their recruitment and are in no rush to make a decision, while at NBPA Top 100 Camp they each took the time to talk about where things stand.
Upshaw (pictured on left), who attends San Joaquin Memorial (CA), declined to list schools by name. However, the big man said that he is hearing from programs in the ACC, Pac-12, Big East, Big Ten, and Horizon League.
"Nobody is recruiting me real hard [and] I have no favorites," Upshaw said, adding that he plans to wait until the spring to take his name off the board.
Asked what he is looking for in a school, Upshaw replied, "Academics . . . the environment, what's gonna be good for me."
At this point, only one college has had the opportunity to host Upshaw for a visit, but even that one came more by chance.
"I've only taken one visit so far and that was an unofficial visit to UCLA," Upshaw said. "That was because I was in the area and the coaches wanted me to stop by. [It] wasn't something I planned."
As for the recruitment Notre Dame Prep (MI)
standout Kellen McCormick, there are a wide range of schools involved. The son of ex-NBA player Tim McCormick, Kellen said he holds offers from Oakland, Toledo, Western Michigan, and Miami (OH).
McCormick said he is also hearing from Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Penn State, Stanford, Boston College, Harvard, Yale, Penn, Providence, Butler, Eastern Michigan, Notre Dame, and some Patriot League programs. He added, "Hopefully more come on in July."
Although McCormick (pictured on right) does not have any favorites right now, he has visited Butler, Michigan (where his father played), Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH), and Toledo. The sharpshooting forward has a plan for how his recruitment will progress from here on out.
"Well, after July my plan is to kind of narrow it down to a couple MAC schools I really like, couple Big Ten schools [and] a couple really good academic schools," McCormick said. "So I think everything will still be happening after July."
McCormick, who reports a GPA in the 3.4 to 3.5 range, hopes to see some more schools before he trims his list down.
"I'm planning to—gonna go to see Northwestern and [I would] also like to see Notre Dame," McCormick said. "As July progresses hopefully I'll be able to get a better read of those six schools I was talking about."
