Cavanaugh, Christon & Rector Discuss Recruitment

by Alex Schwartz

Amongst the standouts at this weekend's Rumble in the Bronx were Tyler Cavanaugh of Jamesville-DeWitt (NY), Semaj Christon of Winton Woods (OH) and Shane Rector of St. Raymond's (NY).

Cavanaugh led his Albany City Rocks Black to a runner-up finish in the U17 Gold bracket while Christon guided the Cincinnati Knights to the U17 Silver title. Rector, a 2013 prospect playing up a year with the NY Gauchos, had maybe the weekend's most impresive performance when he dropped 30 points in a pool play victory.

Cavanaugh (pictured on left), a 6'8 combo forward, displayed a nice ability to score inside and out. He was the main reason the undermanned City Rocks advanced to the finals. At this point, he lists scholarship offers from Vermont, Davidson, Siena, Fairfield, Bucknell, Lafayette, and Colgate.

Cavanaugh noted that he has offers from other schools, including from Patriot League schools and the equivalent of such from Ivy League programs. Clearly an excellent student, he said he has a 93 average in the classroom and scored a 1200 on the two-part SAT.

In addition to his offers, Cavanaugh is hearing from Syracuse, Michigan, Boston College, Cincinnati, and Wake Forest. He has visited Fairfield, Colgate, Syracuse, Siena, and others to date and currently has no visits planned.

"No, my recruitment is wide open right now so I don't really [have any favorites]," Cavanaugh said. "I'm just trying to narrow it down so I can take my official visits in the fall."

Cavanaugh, who sees himself as either a three or a face-up four at the next level, has "no timetable [for a commitment] right now."

Semaj Christon, a 6'3 point guard, is currently in the class of 2011, but will be taking a post-graduate year and will enter college as a 2012 recruit. Christon said that he will be heading to St. Thomas More (CT) in the fall for his extra year.

The talented lead guard said that he has just one offer at this point, with the hometown Xavier Musketeers being the program to offer. In addition to the offer from the Atlantic-10 powerhouse, Christon listed Georgetown, Providence and West Virginia as schools expressing interest.

Christon (pictured on right) said that he has no favorites at this point, nor does he have any timetable for when he plans to make his decision.

Although he has yet to take any visits yet, that will be changing soon. "This week I go to visit all of them," the Buckeye State standout said.

Shane Rector, a 6'1 rising junior point guard, has a whole host of college interest, but has yet to receive any scholarship offers. He listed Pitt, Georgetown, Arizona, Rutgers, St. John's, Villanova, Xavier, and Stanford as schools showing interest, noting that others are involved as well.

Asked if he has any favorites, Rector (pictured on left) replied, "No, not right now, just seeing right now [and] . . . just looking at what kinda schools [are involved], just waiting."

Rector played the two with the Gauchos, but is a one in high school and sees himself as a point guard. The talented New Yorker explained what he is looking for in a college.

"At this point, I just wanna go to a school that's gonna put the ball in my hands as a freshman, [have me] start, let me run the show," Rector said. "Wherever the best opportunity is, that's where I'll go."
