Recap of the First Two Days of the April Signing Period
by Alex Schwartz
The April signing period got underway on Tuesday and things were very quiet for the most part since the majority of big name players were already committed. However, there have been a couple of players in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150 who have made their decisions and a few other talented players also came off the board.
The biggest news of the past two days came out of New Jersey, as Desmond Hubert, the #109 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150,
popped to North Carolina. The 6'9 power forward from New Egypt (NJ) was the second best available big man in the class of 2011 and the sixth best uncommitted player overall.
Hubert's pledge to the Tar Heels was first reported by ESPN's Dave Telep. The long shot blocker, who was down to UNC and Maryland, confirmed the news to me via text message, simply stating, "Yes its true."
In adding Hubert, North Carolina now has a five-man recruiting class that falls just outside the top five nationally. Roy Williams will welcome a pair of McDonald's All-Americans in 6'8 power forward James McAdoo of Norfolk Christian (VA) and 6'4 shooting guard PJ Hairston of Hargrave Military Academy (VA), who are ranked 8th and 34th respectively. Also headed to Chapel Hill are 6'0 point guard Stilman White of Hoggard (NC) and recruited walk-on Jackson Simmons of Smoky Mountain (NC), a 6'7 power forward.
The other ranked prospect to decide in the past two days was 6'4 shooting guard LeAntwan Luckett of Ridgeland (MS), who checks in at #137 on the list. In news I first saw from Scout's Brian Snow, Luckett opted to pull a major surprise and ink with Alcorn State. Needless to say, Luckett is a major addition for the Braves, who won just four games in the 2010-11 season.
In his first month as the head coach at Alcorn State Luther Riley has signed quite possibly the most highly touted recruit in program history. While Luckett reportedly still has work to do to qualify academically, it is a no-lose situation for the SWAC school. ESPN lists Luckett as the first member of Alcorn State's 2011 recruiting class.
Seton Hall continued to load up in 2011, as the Knights picked up a sixth commitment in this recruiting class. In news broken by ZagsBlog, 6'9 power forward Brandon Mobley of St. John's Northwestern Military Academy (WI) opted for the Big East program.
Mobley also considered schools such as Auburn and DePaul before selecting Kevin Willard and Co.
Mobley is part of a recruiting class for SHU that features players from all over the map. He is the second frontcourt signee for Seton Hall, joining 6'11 Isaiah Hill of God's Academy (TX). The other four players headed to SHU are 6'2 point guard Aaron Cosby of Northfield Mt. Hermon (MA), 6'2 shooting guard Freddie Wilson of Hillhouse (CT), 6'5 shooting guard Haralds Karlis of Canarias Basketball Academy (ESP), and 6'2 shooting guard Sean Grennan of Monsignor Donovan (NJ).
Seton Hall was not the only Big East school to garner a commitment of late, as Cincinnati also picked up a pledge from 6'9 power forward Cheikh Mbodji of Grayson CC (TX). The JuCo big man's commitment to the Bearcats was first reported by ZagsBlog.
Like SHU, Cincinnati now has a six-man recruiting class, but Mick Cronin's incoming group features a trio players ranked in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150. The three are #106 ranked 6'2 point guard Jeremiah Davis of Huntington Prep (WV), #124 6'7 small forward Shaq Thomas of NIA Prep (NJ) and #148 6'5 shooting guard Jermaine Sanders of Rice (NY). Mbodji will also be joining 6'3 shooting guard Ge'lawn Guyn of South Kent (CT) and 6'8 power forward Octavious Ellis of Whitehaven (TN) at Cincinnati next year.
A pair of quality point guards also came off the board in the first two days of the April signing period. Bryan Everson of MichiganPreps.com had the news that 5'11 Patrick Lucas-Perry of Powers Catholic (MI) had selected Penn over Oakland. It was TexasHoops.com that reported that 6'0 Trey Davis of Woodrow Wilson (TX) was off to George Washington.
Lucas-Perry reportedly selected Penn over Oakland, which is where his older brother Laval goes to school. Laval transferred to Oakland from Michigan and sat out this past season. Patrick Lucas-Perry, per ESPN, is now commitment number seven for Penn. He joins Greg Louis of Dwyer (FL), Cameryn Crocker of Los Alamitos (NM), Keelan Cairns of Barking Abbey (ENG), Simeon Esprit of Barking Abbey (ENG, and Xavier Harris of Constitution (PA).
As for George Washington, Trey Davis is the third member of the incoming recruiting class of Karl Hobbs and Co. The headliner is 6'8 power forward Erik Copes of Imhotep Charter (PA), while the other player bound for GW is 6'7 power forward Jonathan Davis of Simi Valley (CA).
Here is a quick rundown of some of the other commitments of the past couple of days:
- Tyler Brown, a 6'3 JuCo shooting guard at Marshalltown CC (IA), has selected Illinois State according to JuCoRecruiting.com
- Ellison (TX) 6'6 small forward Jaleel Williams has pledged to San Jose State, per TexasHoops.com
- InsidePrepSports.net reported that Marquavis Ford, a 6'1 point guard out of Saginaw (MI), will take his game to Northern Illinois

- Hawaii tapped in to the JuCo ranks for a pledge from 6'7 small forward Hauns Brereton of Western Nebraska CC, per JucoRecruiting.com
- Jon Rothstein reported via his Twitter account that a pair of JuCo prospects popped to Iona in 6'7 small forward Taaj Ridley of Lawson State CC (AL) & 6'6 small forward Nyandigisi Moikobu of Cochise College (AZ)
