Commitment Catch-up

by Alex Schwartz

Below is a roundup of some of the recent commitments in high school hoops from across the country. A number of players have come off the board, both in the class of 2011 and in 2012.

North Carolina added a fourth member to its 2011 recruiting class, as 6'0 point guard Stilman White (pictured on left) of Hoggard (NC) popped to the Tar Heels. The news was broken by ESPN's Dave Telep, who added that White will spend one year at UNC before doing a two-year Mormon mission and then returning to Chapel Hill for three years.

Roy Williams was in search of a point guard in the senior class and found his man in White. He joins James McAdoo of Norfolk Christian (VA), PJ Hariston of Hargrave Military Academy (VA), and recruited walk-on Jackson Simmons of Smoky Mountain (NC) in UNC's 2011 class. McAdoo and Hairston are McDonald's All-Americans and are ranked #9 and #34 respectively in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150.

Another 2011 point guard to come off the board lately was 6'1 Anthony Collins of Westbury Christian (TX), who popped to South Florida according to RCS Sports. Collins, who went with USF over in-state Baylor, is the third member of Stan Heath's 2011 recruiting haul. He joins T. Jordan Omogbehin of Atlantic Shores (VA) and JuCo prospect Andre Jackson of Lee CC (TX).

Speaking of JuCo prospects, new Texas Tech had coach recently landed a pair of them, per TexasHoops.com. Tyler JC (TX) teammates Jaron Nash, a 6'7 small forward, and Kader Tapsoba, a 6'10 center, both selected the Red Raiders. According to this article from TylerPaper.com, Nash (pictured on right side of photo on right) will have three years of eligibility and Tapsoba (pictured on left side of photo on right) will have two.

TTU signed five players in the fall period, so if they all stick with the new coaching regime, Gillispie would be welcoming seven new players. The five players who signed to go to Lubbock are Toddrick Gotcher of Lakeview Centennial (TX), Jordan Tolbert of All Saints' Episcopal (TX), Terran Petteway of Ball (TX), Kevin Wagner of Estacado (TX), and Hershey Robinson of Christian Life Center (TX). Gotcher is lone member of the class ranked in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, checking in at #116 on the list.

Another JuCo player who recently made his commitment was Maurice Kemp, Jr. (pictured on left) of Miami-Dade CC (FL). The 6'6 power forward began his career at Alabama A&M before heading to a JuCo, and he is now going to play for East Carolina. Evan Daniels of Scout originally broke Kemp's commitment to the Pirates. The commitment Kemp, who can play either forward position, to ECU was confirmed to me by his father, Maurice Kemp, Sr.

"Moe has verbally committed to attend East Carolina University," Mr. Kemp said via email. "He is thrilled to be a Pirate and to play for Coach Jeff Lebo!" Kemp, who averaged 16.8 points and 9.9 rebounds this season, is the fourth member of ECU's 2011 recruiting class. He joins fellow JuCo standout Shamarr Bowden of Chipola JC (FL), Paris Roberts-Campbell of United Faith Christian Academy (NC) and Paul Stone of Dan River (VA).

Penn landed a major coup this week when 6'7 power forward Henry Brooks (pictured on right) of Miller Grove (GA) pledged to the Quakers, according to a source close to the situation. Brooks reportedly had offers from schools such as Minnesota and Tennessee, so he is a superb get for the Ivy League school. Brooks is the sixth member of Penn's 2011 class according to ESPN, as he joins Greg Louis of Dwyer (FL), Cameryn Crocker of Los Alamitos (NM), Keelan Cairns of Barking Abbey (ENG), Simeon Esprit of Barking Abbey (ENG, and Xavier Harris of Constitution (PA).

Penn was not the only school in Philadelphia to get a commitment this week, though. Drexel received a pledge from 6'4 shooting guard Damion Lee of St. Thomas More (CT), per a pair of sources with knowledge of the situation. Lee is the fourth member of the Dragons' 2011 class, joining Tavon Allen of Worcester Academy (MA), Kazembe Abif of Lawrenceville School (NJ) and Aquil Younger of Simon Gratz (PA).

Marist doubled the size of its 2011 class, adding a pair of in-state standouts to its recruiting haul in news I first saw from Gotham Hoops Scouting. Both 6'0 point guard TJ Curry (pictured on left) of Christ the King (NY) and 6'5 shooting guard Chavaughn Lewis of St. Mary's (NY) popped to the Red Foxes. They join Isaiah Morton of St. Augustine's (NJ) and Manny Thomas of Xaverian (NY) in Marist's recruiting class. Morton is ranked #35 in Northstar Basketball's New Jersey Class of 2011 Fab 50.

In addition to Curry and Lewis, another New Yorker made his decision this week. According to Zach Braziller of the New York Post, Bryan Smith of Midwood (NY) pledged to the Fordham Rams. The 6'2 point guard is the fifth member of Tom Pecora's 2011 recruiting class. Smith joins Ryan Canty of Brimmer & May (MA), Devon "Fatty" McMillan of Notre Dame Prep (MA), Jeff Short of Notre Dame Prep (MA), and Luka Zivkovic of Traders Point Christian Academy (IN).

One school landed both a 2011 commitment and a 2012 commitment of late, and that was the Michigan. According to Scout's Brian Snow, 6'7 power forward Max Bielfeldt (pictured on right) of Peoria Notre Dame (IL) selected the Wolverines, becoming the third member of John Beilein's 2011 recruiting class. Bielfeldt is coming off of a splendid senior season and joins a pair of top 100 ranked players in Michigan's recruiting class. Carlton Brundidge of Southfield (MI) checks in at #84 in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, while Trey Burke of Northland (OH) is #96 on the list.

In addition to Bielfeldt, Michigan also picked up a pledge from 6'5 shooting guard Nik Stauskas of St. Mark's (MA), per Alex Kline of The Recruit Scoop. A native of Canada, Stauskas is the second piece of the puzzle in Michgian's 2012 class, according to ESPN. He joins Glenn Robinson, Jr. of Lake Central (IN) as 2012 prospects bound for Ann Arbor.

Another school to garner a 2012 commitment of late was Wake Forest, which dipped into Virginia for 6'11 center Andre Washington, per Hoopniks. The Roanoke Catholic (VA) standout is already the third player in the junior class to commit to Jeff Bzdelik and the Demon Deacons, joining Codi Miller-McIntyre of First Assembly Christian (NC) and Aaron Rountree of Greenfield (NC).

Maryland kicked off its 2012 recruiting class in a big way, picking up a commitment from 6'5 small forward Justin Anderson (pictured on left) of Montrose Christian (MD), per multiple reports. Anderson is the #22 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50 and is one of the most athletic players in the nation regardless of class. He selected the Terrapins over his home state Virginia Cavaliers and North Carolina, although he reportedly did not have an offer from UNC.

Evan Nolte (pictured on right) was the other high-profile 2012 player to commit recently, as the 6'7 small forward from Milton (GA) popped to the Virginia Cavaliers today, per Evan Daniels. A lethal shooter with length, Nolte is one of the better wing prospects in the junior class and is a superb pickup for Tony Bennett.

This is the third consecutive class in which Bennett will be bringing a 6'6+ shooter on the wing to Charlottesville, as Nolte follows #128 ranked in Paul Jesperson of Merrill (WI) in 2011 and Joe Harris of Chelan (WA) in 2010. Nolte joins Mike Tobey of Hotchkiss School (CT) in what is so far a quality two-man 2012 recruiting class for Virginia.
