Kevin Kaspar Has Options
by Alex Schwartz
In addition to Dominique McKoy and Jarion Henry, there was a third uncommitted player who participated in the Jack Jones Shootout this past Sunday at American Airlines Arena in Miami. Kevin Kaspar, a 6'1 point guard out of Turkey who attends Findlay Prep (NV) was the lone available guard in the game.
Although Kaspar was not able to display his skill set in Friday's practice due to a flight cancellation, he did show off his arsenal in the actual game on Sunday. Despite the all-star setting, Kaspar's outstanding feel for the game was
quite evident. He dished out of a number of beautiful passes and demonstrated his ability to handle the basketball. While some think that Kaspar is more of a shooting guard, he sure looked like he has the tools to handle the point at the next level.
Kaspar's stat line from the game does not tell the full story of his performance. The senior finished with five points, three rebounds, and two assists for the White team in a 79-72 loss.
After the game—if you missed the broadcast, for which I did play-by-play, it can be viewed at the High School Sports Network—I caught up with Todd Simon for an update on Kaspar's recruitment. Simon is an assistant coach at Findlay Prep and discussed where things stand with the talented senior.
Dayton, Sam Houston State, Creighton, Western Kentucky, UMass, Central Michigan, and TCU are the schools involved with Kaspar, Simon said. Although all of them have offered him a scholarship, Kaspar has yet to make any college visits and does not have any scheduled at this point.
"He's got to decide on some visits," coach Simon said. "I don't know that he necessarily has [a group of] five yet. We said when we get back from the National [High School Invitational] we'll sit down [and discuss it]."
One of the school on Kaspar's list, Dayton, saw its head coach leave for another school (Georgia Tech) since the interview was conducted. Thus, it remains to be seen where things stand with the Atlantic-10 program.
Coach Simon has seen some great players during his five years at Findlay Prep and has some strong words about the talent level of Kaspar.
"I just think whoever gets him is gonna get a guy who's not gonna be bashful [and] he's gonna increase productivity," Simon said. "I absolutely love that kid. [He is an] awesome teammate."
UPDATE: Soon after I first posted this, Todd Simon informed me that three other school are involved with Kaspar as well. "Northern Illinois offered [and is] going hard at Kevin now," coach Simon said. NIU recently hired Mark Montgomery as its new head coach. In addition, Virginia head coach Tony Bennett recently expressed interest in Kaspar and St. Bonaventure is involved in the point guard's recruitment.
