Commitment Catch-up

by Alex Schwartz

As I'm sure you have been able to tell by my infrequent posting over the past couple of weeks, it has been a very busy time for me. I hope to be back in the groove with regular posts now and I appreciate you baring with me. Have a look below at some of the commitments that have come down in the past few days, and a couple that were a bit longer ago.

One of the top dozen available big men recently took his name off the board, as 6'8 power forward Nemanja Djurisic of South Kent (CT) committed to the Georgia Bulldogs. The news was first reported by Scout's Brian Snow.

With the lack of quality post players still left in the class of 2011, Djurisic is a solid get for Mark Fox and Co. late in the game. He is the fourth pledge for the SEC program, the most prominent of which is Kentavious Caldwell-Pope of Greenville (GA), the #14 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150. The other future Bulldogs are Tim Dixon of Oldsmar Christian (FL) and JuCo prospect John Florveus of Hillsborough CC (FL).

The best senior to commit in the month of March was Cezar Guerrero, a 6'0 point guard out of St. John Bosco (CA) who is ranked #95 in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150. A one-time commitment to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, Guerrero has now decided to take his game to Oklahoma State next season, per Jerry Meyer of Rivals. Iowa and Oklahoma were two of the other programs he strongly considered.

Gurerrero is one of just two pledges for the Cowboys in the 2011 class, but both of them are top 100 prospects. The other senior bound for Stillwater is LeBryan Nash of Lincoln (TX), the #10 ranked player in the senior class. Oklahoma State previously had a commitment from elite JuCo prospect Karron Johnson of Midland CC (TX), but the sides have since parted ways.

OJ Mayo is not the only member of his family who can play ball, as his younger brother Todd is now set to play high-major hoops as well. New England Recruiting Report's Adam Finkelstein had the news that the 6'3 post-graduate shooting guard from Notre Dame Prep (MA) had pledged to Marquette.

Mayo is the third member of a solid 2011 recruiting class that Buzz Williams is set to bring into the Big East school. He joins Juan Anderson of Castro Valley (CA) and Derrick Wilson of Hotchkiss School (CT), the #99 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150.

Colorado picked up a commitment JuCo prospect, as Jeremy Adams of Navarro JC (TX) committed to the soon-to-be Pac-12 program. I heard of the news via ESPN, which cited a report from the Boulder Daily Camera. The 6'5 shooting guard is the fourth 2011 pledge for first year Colorado head coach Tad Boyle, with the other three being high schoolers in California: Spencer Dinwiddie of Taft (CA), Damiene Cain of Harvard-Westlake (CA) and Askia Booker of Price (CA).

Rivals' Eric Bossi reported that 6'6 power forward Roquez Johnson of Carver (AL) committed to Mississippi State. Although undersized, Johnson is a hard-working player who gets the job done. He is the fourth commitment for the Bulldogs in the 2011 class, the first of whom is not from the Magnolia State. Johnson joins DJ Gardner of Okolona (MS) as well as pair of top 55 ranked players in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150 in #32 Rodney Hood of Meridian (MS) and #54 Deville Smith of Callaway (MS).

According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, New Mexico State has added a commitment in the class of 2011. Terrel de Rouen, a 6'2 point guard from Onate (NM), pledged to the Aggies. He is the second commit in the senior class, per ESPN, for the WAC school, joining Temjae Singleton of El Camino Real (CA).

Central Connecticut State double-dipped this week, garnering not one, but two commitments from prospects in the 2011 class. First, the Blue Devils went down south and snagged a pledge from 6'4 shooting guard Adonis Burbage of Orlando Christian Prep (FL), per Florida Hoops. Then, 6'2 combo guard Shelton Mickell of Cardozo (NY) decided on the NEC, according to Zach Braziller of the New York Post. Per ESPN, the other members of Central Connecticut State's class are Kyle Vinales of Phelps School (PA) and Teris Bourgeois of Clear Springs (TX).

A few other 2011 commitments of late . . . 5'11 point guard Chad Holley of Blue Ridge (VA) opted for Mount St. Mary's according to the Twitter page of his AAU coach; 6'5 small forward Tevin Hanner of Milford Mill (MD) is headed to Loyola (MD), per Varsity Sports Network; 6'9 power forward Ryon Riggins of North Gwinnett (GA) selected Tennessee Tech according to multiple reports; 6'7 small forward Dino Jakolis of La Lumiere (IN) is bound for Valparaiso, per the Northwest Indiana Times; 6'7 power forward Samer Ozeir of Novi (MI) committed to Columbia, reported InsidePrepSports.net

As I posted yesterday, 6'10 center Daniel Ochefu of Westtown (PA) verbally committed to the Villanova Wildcats. Ochefu is the #10 ranked player in NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50 and his pledge was firstr eported by Alex Kline of The Recruit Scoop. Ochefu selected Villanova over fellow finalists Georgetown, Temple and Texas to become the third member of the Wildcats' 2012 class.

All three of the future Wildcats are in-state standouts who go to high school within an hour of the Villanova campus. In addition, all three of them are ranked in the top 40 in the junior class. The other pledges to the Big East school are #32 ranked 6'6 small forward Savon Goodman of Academy of the New Church (PA) and #40 ranked 6'3 point guard Ryan Arcidiacono of Neshmainy (PA). It is still early, but Villanova currently has the second best 2012 recruiting class.

The only school with a better 2012 class than Villanova right now is Indiana. The Hoosiers only strengthened their haul today when Jeremy Hollowell announced for IU over Cincinnati, Ohio State and Purdue, per multiple reports. The 6'6 small forward out of Lawrence Central (IN) is already the fifth junior commit to Tom Crean and his staff.

All but one of the five IU commitments are from the Hoosier State. Not only does Indiana have the most 2012 commits of any program with five, but it is the only program with pledges from four players ranked in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50.

Hollowell is third highest rated of the bunch, checking in at #42 on the list. Leading the way is 6'8 power forward Hanner Perea of La Lumiere (IN) at #15 in the 2012 class. The other ranked players bound for Bloomington are #36 ranked 5'10 point guard Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell of Park Tudor School (IN) and #49 7'0 center Peter Jurkin of United Faith Christian Academy (NC). The other IU commitment is 6'3 shooting guard Ron Patterson of Broad Ripple (IN).
