X. Harris to Penn; M. Ostling to Oregon St.
by Alex Schwartz
In addition to Gill St. Bernard's (NJ) star class of 2013 point guard Jaren Sina committing to Alabama, there have been a pair of other commitments in the past few days. A school in the Northeast added a class of 2011 forward, while a Pacific Northwest program received a pledge from a 2012 center.
In news that was broken by Northstar Basketball
through our Twitter page, Xavier Harris of Constitution (PA) verbally committed to the Penn Quakers on Tuesday evening. The 6'5 power forward began his high school career with Syracuse-signee Rakeem Christmas at the now defunct North Catholic (PA).
Harris, although undersized, is a rugged low post player with nice athletic ability. When I last saw him play, in late December at the Scholastic Play-by-Play's Nelson Classic, he scored 18 points in a 75-56 victory over Dobbins Tech (PA).
According to an article on his commitment at philly.com, Harris needs to add 30 points to his SAT score to satisfy the stringent academic standards of the Ivy League program. In addition, the article noted that Harris will be the first player from the Philadelphia Public League—commonly referred to as the Pub—to suit up for Penn as a recruited player since Willie Oliphant in the early 80's.
RecruitRecon lists Harris is the second commitment for Penn in the class of 2011. He joins Greg Louis of nationally ranked Dwyer (FL) as seniors who have pledged to head coach Jerome Allen and Co.
It was Jeff Goodman, a national writer for FOXSports.com, who was the first to report the commitment of Maika Ostling to Oregon State. Goodman broke the news through his Twitter page on Thursday night that the 6'10 class of 2012 center from Dayton (OR) had pledged to the Beavers.
In Ostling, Oregon State is adding an in-state post presence with nice height. Although not particularly well known on a national level, Ostling did enough to garner a scholarship offer from OSU head coach Craig Robinson, the brother-in-law of President Barack Obama.
Ostling is the first commitment for Oregon State in the class of 2012, according to Scout.
