Floridian Updates: Smith to UCF, Comer Gets Release

by Alex Schwartz

There have been a couple of fairly big recruiting recruiting stories to come out of the state of Florida in the past two days. One of the best juniors in the Sunshine State took his name off the board, while a talented senior was released from his NLI.

According to multiple reports, Shawn Smith '12 of Providence School (FL) pledged his services to UCF. The 6'4 shooting guard burst onto the scene during the high school season with his play for Arlington Country Day (FL), but then transferred to Providence in the midst of the season.

A talented player who reportedly held multiple offers from BCS programs, Smith is a major coup for first year UCF head coach Donnie Jones. He is the fourth high-major caliber player to commit to the Knights in the past sixth months, which is quite impressive for a C-USA program. The other three are all seniors ranked in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, including #52 ranked Michael Chandler of Lawrence North (IN), who also committed this month.

Smith is the first player to pop to UCF in the 2012 class, but is not the only player on his high school team headed to the school. Wayne Martin, ranked #133 in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, is bound for UCF as well.

While UCF picked up a key commitment, Florida Atlantic recently lost an important pledge. According to ESPN's Paul Biancardi, 6'2 shooting guard Brett Comer '11 of Winter Park (FL), was granted a release from his Letter of Intent to FAU.

A high school teammate of Duke-signee Austin Rivers, Comer had been committed to the Owls for quite some time. Scout first reported Comer's pledge to FAU on August 10th of 2009, nearly a year and a half ago. Due to the fact that he had signed his NLI and had been committed for such a long period of time, Tuesday's news is certainly a surprise.

Comer will likely have a number of suitors come his way, as he is a solid outside shooter who can handle point guard duties if needed. In addition, he is tough and is able to score the ball off the bounce.
