Life Center Academy Recruiting Update
by Alex Schwartz
Yesterday I went to a pair of hoops games in Mercer County and was able to a plethora of Division I prospects in the Garden State.
I first watched on as The Pennington School (NJ) defeated Princeton Day School (NJ) by a score of 44-40. La Salle head coach John Giannini and Princeton assistant coach Martin Bahar were in attendance for the game as well.
The second game I took in was Hun School (NJ) against Life Center Academy (NJ). A strong fourth quarter helped LCA to a 66-58 victory.
I had a chance to get a pair of school lists at the latter game. Life Center head coach Wilson Arroyo provided me with a recruiting update on a pair of his uncommitted guards.
Rashawn Cunningham, a 5'10 point guard, is one of the better available seniors in the state of New Jersey. The #36 ranked player in the New Jersey Class of 2011 Fab 50, Cunningham is currently not garnering much recruiting attention. A main reason for this is because he tore his ACL in Life Center's final game of the 2009-10 season.
Due to his injury, Cunningham was not able to play in any of LCA's postseason tournaments and also missed all of the summer AAU and camp action. Thus, college coaches were not able to see him play in the prime evaluation period.
Iona, Philadelphia U (DII), and Penn are the schools showing the most interest in Cunningham, who coach Arroyo said is "back to 100%" Other programs are involved as well, though. At this point, Cunningham has no offers and no favorites.
With Cunningham slowly working his way back into the lineup for Life Center, 5'10 junior point guard Matt Johnson is getting a great deal of playing time. A talented, consummate point guard, Johnson is in his first year at LCA after transferring in from St. Anthony's (NJ).
Johnson is currently garnering interest from several Division I programs. Penn, Rider, Iona, St. Peter's, and St. Francis (PA) were the schools specifically mentioned by Arroyo, who noted that others are showing interest as well.
At this point, Johnson does not have any scholarship offers. The class of 2012 floor general's older brother, Jayson Johnson, is a senior at Life Center Academy.
