Commitment/Signing Week Catch-Up

by Alex Schwartz

Although the early signing period has been largely uneventful, there have still been a few high-major commitments that have come down. The decisions have kept coming over the past few days, and below I will catch you up on the recent pledges as well as some other signing week news that has come up recently.

- Jeremiah Davis, the #106 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top150, committed to Cincinnati, according to multiple reports. Davis, a 6'2 point guard from Huntington Prep (WV), selected the Bearcats over Oklahoma State. He is the fifth commitment for Cincinnati in the class of 2011, the third of whom is a ranked player. He joins #124 ranked Shaq Thomas of NIA Prep (NJ), #148 ranked Jermaine Sanders of Rice (NY), Ge'lawn Guyn of Brewster Academy (NH), and Octavious Ellis of Whitehaven (TN).

- Colorado added the third member of its 2011 recruiting class, and like the first two, he is from California. Damiene Cain, a 6'6 power forward from Harvard-Westlake (CA), committed to first year Colorado head coach Tad Boyle according to Jerry Meyer of Rivals. His fellow future Buffaloes in the senior class are Spencer Dinwiddie of Taft (CA) and Askia Booker of Price (CA).

- The St. John's Red Storm double-dipped on Tuesday, adding a pair of commitments. First, 6'7 power forward Dwight Meikle of Quality Education Academy (NC) selected the Big East program according to the official St. John's basketball Twitter page. In the evening, Dave Telep of ESPN broke the news that Amir Garrett of Findlay Prep (NV) was going to sign with the Johnnies tomorrow. Garrett, a 6'6 small forward, is the #65 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150 and is the eighth pledge for first year STJ head coach Steve Lavin. By adding Garrett, St. John's becomes the only school with commitments from six ranked players. Meikle and Garrett join #21 ranked D'Angelo Harrison of Dulles (TX), #24 ranked JaKarr Sampson of Brewster Academy (NH), #47 ranked Norvel Pelle of Price (CA), #60 ranked Maurice Harkless of South Kent (CT), #92 ranked Sir'Dominic Pointer of Quality Education Academy (NC), and JuCo star Nurideen Lindsey of Redlands CC (OK) in the Red Storm's class.

- Seton Hall picked up its third commitment in the class of 2011 on Tuesday, when Freddie Wilson of Hillhouse (CT) pledged to the Pirates, per ESPN. Wilson, a 6'2 combo guard, joins Aaron Cosby of Northfield Mt. Hermon (MA) and Haralds Karlis of the Canaries Basketball Academy in the SHU recruiting class.

- Ryan McCoy, a 6'6 small forward from Montgomery (NJ), has committed to and signed with the Manhattan Jaspers. Per ESPN, McCoy is the fifth pledge for the MAAC school in the 2011 class, joining Thomas Jefferson (NY) teammates Edson Avila and Davontay Grace, Dayvon Whitaker of CJEOTO Academy (NJ), and JuCo prospect Zachary Lamb of Miami-Dade CC (FL).

- ESPN has reported that Ryan Taylor of Western (KY) remains committed to Louisville, but will not sign early. Taylor, a 6'5 small forward, is the #78 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150.

- ESPN has also reported that JuCo stud Karron Johnson of Midland College (TX), a 6'8 power forward, did indeed sign with Oklahoma State.

- According to Eric Bossi of Rivals, Cezar Guerrero of St. John Bosco (CA) has not signed his NLI with Western Kentucky and may reopen his recruitment. Guerrero, a 6'0 point guard, is the #95 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150.

- Per a source, William Allen (PA) standouts Daquan Holiday, an NJIT commit, and Jalen Cannon, a St. Francis (NY) commit, will sign on Wednesday. Holiday is a 6'7 power forward and Cannon is a 6'6 power forward.
