Signing Day Rundown

by Alex Schwartz

Wednesday, November 10 was a huge day in the high school and college basketball world. It was the first day that basketball players in the class of 2011 could sign a National Letter of Intent to their future college.

Throughout the course of the day I tweeted hundreds of updates players making their college choices official. Some of them were retweets, but many of them—especially later in the day—included information that I collected from a variety of sources.

In this post I will spell out much of what I tweeted so as to put it all in one place. While most of the committed players signed on Wednesday, some are signing later in the week, some will sign late, and some are unsure. In addition, other news came up about some of the players during the day on Wednesday.

Without further ado, here is my signing day rundown:

- The biggest news of the day was actually a decommitment. According to multiple reports, Michael Chandler of Lawrence North (IN) decommitted from Xavier and is back on the board. Jerry Meyer of Rivals reported that UConn, Oregon, and Providence are the schools in play, and Brian Snow of Scout reported that UConn is the heavy favorite. Chandler is the #52 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150 and is fourth amongst centers.

- Rashad "Ky" Madden of East Poinsett County (AR), the #40 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, reportedly did not sign with Arkansas today. Madden committed to the Razorbacks over Ole Miss and Baylor a few weeks ago, but there have been conflicting reports about whether or not he will sign this week. Jeff Borzello of Busting the Bracket reported that Madden is undecided as to whether he will sign Friday or in the spring. This will be one to watch.

- According to Evan Daniels of Scout, JuCo star Karron Johnson of Midland College (TX) wil not sign with Oklahoma State this week, yet is still committed to the Cowboys.

- After months of speculation that Brad Beal of Chaminade (MO) would not end up at Florida, he signed with the Gators on Wednesday, putting all the rumors to rest. Beal is the #5 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150.

- Ohio State signed three of its four ranked commits on Wednesday, as #36 Shannon Scott of Milton (GA), #57 Sam Thompson of Whitney Young (IL), and #87 Trey McDonald of Battle Creek Central (MI) all made it official for the Buckeyes. The other OSU commit is #67 ranked LaQuinton Ross of Life Center Academy (NJ). Reports indicate that Ross is still committed to the Big Ten school, but is waiting to sign until after he visits Columbus this weekend.

- The #7 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, Adonis Thomas of Melrose (TN), officially signed with the Memphis Tigers.

- One high-major commitment came down on Wednesday, as Angel Rodriguez of Dr. Krop (FL) selected Kansas State. "Angel Rodriguez has verballed to Kansas State over Louisville and NCState," said Miami Tropics AAU coach Art Alvarez via text. "Very tough decision. [Angel] has committed but wont sign til the late signing period in April." As for why Rodriguez is waiting to sign, Alvarez commented, "We went to make [sure] that Frank Martin is still there come april. Frank is real hot now and the kid wants to play for him."

- St. John's signed four of the five members of its tremendous class on Wednesday. D'Angelo Harrison of Dulles (TX), JaKarr Sampson of Brewster Academy (NH), Maurice Harkless of South Kent (CT), and JuCo prospect Nurideen Lindsey of Redlands CC (OK) all signed with the Red Storm.
