Three PGs Come Off the Board; Two from Hun Commit
by Alex Schwartz
The early signing period will begin in a few hours and players in the class of 2011 will finally be able to sign with their future colleges. Before the week begins I wanted to catch you all up on some of the commitments that have come during the past few days.
The biggest news that came out recently was the commitment of 5'10 point guard Ryan Boatright of Aurora East (IL)to the UConn Huskies. The #62 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, Boatright was the second highest ranked available point guard. His commitment was first reported on Monday by NBE Basketball Report.
Boatright made national headlines when he committed to USC before even starting high school. He later decommitted when there was a coaching staff. A few weeks ago he committed to West Virginia, only to decommit four days later since the Mountaineers had added a pledge from another top 100 point guard, Jabarie Hinds.
The skilled floor general is the first commitment for UConn in the class of 2011. Missouri is now the lone school in a BCS conference that does not have a pledge in the crop of seniors.
Later in the day on Monday, another tanked point guard came off the board in news first reported by Evan Daniels of Scout.
Hotchkiss School (CT) star and Alaska native Derrick Wilson verbally committed to Marquette. Wilson, who stands 6'1, is the #99 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150 and was the second best available point guard once Boatright committed.
Wilson is the second commitment for Marquette in the class of 2011, joining Juan Anderson of Castro Valley (CA). With Boatright picking UConn and Wilson selecting Marquette, the only Big East schools without a ranked commitment in the senior class are Providence, Seton Hall, and South Florida.
There are now just two uncommitted ranked point guards in the class of 2011 with #56 Trevor Lacey of Butler (AL) leading the way. He is the #15 ranked player at that position, while Jeremiah Davis of Huntington Prep (WV) is the #28 point guard and #106 overall.
The other point guard to commit in the past few days was Spencer Dinwiddie of Taft (CA), who opted to go with Colorado, according to multiple reports. Dinwiddie was being recruited by schools coast to coast, including Harvard.
Colorado now has two pledges in the class of 2011, and both of them are from California. Dinwiddie joins Askia Booker of Price (CA) in the recruiting class for first year Colorado head coach Tad Boyle.
A couple of players from Hun School (NJ) made their verbal commitments in the past week. In news first reported by The Recruit Scoop, Will Wise selected UMBC.
The other Hun School player, also a 2011 big man, to commit was Grant Fiorentinos. He went with Tulane according to The Recruit Scoop.
