National Preseason High School Top 100- Part Three: 31-50
by Alex Schwartz
The 2010-11 high school basketball season is right around the corner! So, what does that mean? Well, for one it means that it is time for Northstar Basketball release its National Preseason High School Top 100.
The top 100 list will be released in five segments, plus a comprehensive list at the end with some notes on the rankings. For each team, I will provide an overview of the squad. With each segment, the size of the overview will increase and be filled with more information.
The rankings include both public and private schools, but not prep schools. For these purposes, prep schools are defined as schools that have fifth-year players and/or post-grads, as well as all schools that play in the NEPSAC. That means that teams such as Christ School (NC), Lawrence Academy (MA), Northfield Mt. Hermon (MA), and Quality Education Academy (NC) are ineligible.
Without further ado, here is the third segment of Northstar Basketball's National Preseason High School Top 100. This segment will include the teams ranked 31 through 50. Segment one (teams 76-100) can be seen by clicking Here and segment two (51-75) can be seen by clicking Here.
31. Douglass (OK): Far and away the number one team in Oklahoma, Douglass is coming off an undefeated state championship season and should be even better this time around. The top two players on the team are both guards in Missouri State-bound senior Dorrian Williams and diminutive, but explosive Stevie Clark, one of the top sophomores in the country. The key player in the post will be Ramond Jenkins '11.
32. La Verne Lutheran (CA): Although not necessarily a traditional power in California, Lutheran will be a force to be reckoned with in 09-10 behind the play of a pair of Division I committed seniors and one of the best juniors in the country. The best player on the team is big man Grant Jerrett, who is ranked #12 in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50. Senior guards CJ Cooper and Bruce English are headed to UTEP and Loyola Marymount, respectively. Senior big man Xavier Jones, sophomore guard Eric Cooper, Jr., and freshman guard Tide Osifeso are the other key players for a team that likely be in the running for the number one spot in the Golden State.
33. Gonzaga (DC): This team lost a lot of talent from last year, but with some terrific players coming back, the addition of a big-time transfer, and the fantasic coaching of Steve Turner, Gonzaga will be outstanding once again. The top three players on the team are all sophomores who are amongst the best in their class in the nation in wing DJ Fenner (a transfer), power forward Kris Jenkins, and point guard Nate Britt. Seniors Oliver Ellison and Ben Dickinson as well as junior Will Rassman are superb big men, while Cahli Thomas provides senior leadership in the backcourt for the top team in Washington, DC.
34. IC Norcom (VA): Led by a trio of seniors, two of whom have committed to Division I programs, Norcom will look to build on last year's fantastic season. Dorian Finney-Smith, who is headed to Virginia Tech, is one of the best players in the state of Virginia and wil be the go-to guy for this team. Morgan State-pledge Jeremy Canty and and DeCarlos Anderson are the other key players and they will be the main men in the backcourt for the best public school team in the Old Dominion State.
35. Prestonwood Christian (TX): When a team has one of the best players in the nation regardless of class and another player who has committed to Kansas, you know it is big-time and that is exactly the case here. Julius Randle is the best sophomore in America and is an absolute beast who can take over a game, while fellow big man Zach Peters is a junior who has pledged to Kansas. While these two will carry most of the load, they have a deep supporting cast that includes 7-footer Ivan Rangel '11, Aaron Wyatt '11, and Jackson Forbes '14 as bigs, Austin Rettig '12 on the wing, and Marquan Botley '13 in the backcourt.
36. Montrose Christian (MD): By the standards for this tradition-rich national powerhouse, this will be a bit of a down year, but Montrose is still quite talented and will make some noise. The top players on the team are Villanova-bound senior guard Tyrone Johnson, a New Jersey native, and athletic junior wing Justin Anderson from Virginia. Other key players for Stu Vetter's team will be LeBrent Walker, a junior guard from New York, and senior guards Tyler Hubbard from Washington, DC, and Carmelo Betancourt of Puerto Rico.
37. Mater Dei (CA): After two years near the very top of national rankings and the loss of a great deal of talent, Mater Dei will come back down to earth a big in 09-10, but will remain one of the top teams in California. The top player for the team will be Xavier Johnson, who is in his first year at the school after transferring in. Fellow junior Katin Reinhardt and freshman sensation Shaqquan Aaron are the other stars on the squad, but there are other talents as well. Eli Stalzer '12, Stanley Johnson '14, and Wes Mitter '13 will assist Reinhardt in the backcourt.
38. DeSoto (TX): Although not as deep as most highly ranked teams, DeSoto has a tremendous inside-outside duo that will be tough for any team to handle. Florida State-commit Antwan Space is a senior who can play either forward spot and get the job done, while Matt Jones is a dead eye shooter and one of the elite sophomores in the country. Jabril Durham, a junior point guard, will be the team's other key player.
39. Lincoln (CA): Yet another team in this segment from the state of California, Lincoln is led by a phenomenal tandem of wing players. UCLA-bound senior Norman Powell will team with stud sophomore Tyree Robinson to form a perimeter duo that will be nearly impossible to contain. Another wing player is the team's third option, as Rasean Simpson is a senior who should not be overlooked.
40. Benedictine (VA): Led by Duke-commit Michael Gbinije, the #19 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, Benedictine could turn some heads in Virginia this senior. Gbinije, a lethal scorer from the wing, is part of a quartet of seniors who will be the main men for this team. The other three 2011 standouts are Richmond-bound Trey Davis, Erik Moody, and RJ Price, all of whom will be inthe backcourt.
41. Upper Room Christian Academy (NC): Junior guard Rodney Purvis, a prolific scorer who can play either spot in the backcourt, is one of the elite players in the nation regardless of class. Purvis is the headliner for this Tar Heel State team, but big man Tyrek Coger is one of the top sophomores in America and is a large presence on the low blocks. Waymond Wright, a 2013 guard, is the other standout for URCA.
42. Price (CA): A pair of top 85 players in the class of 2010 have moved on to college, but Price will be one of the best teams in California nonetheless. Led by long and athletic senior big man Norvel Pelle, Price still has a roster that is filled with talent. Colorado-commit Askia Booker is the other key senior for the team, while there are three younger standouts as well. Skylar Spencer '12 and Devin Burlseon '14 are quality big men and Chance Murray '13 is a superb floor general.
43. Simeon (IL): This squad from Chicago is led by one of the top sophomores in America is combo forward Jabari Parker, the son of ex-NBA player Sonny Parker. Junior forward Steve Taylor is coming off a quality summer and is a fine talent, while senior guard Ahman Fells is committed to Illinois-Chicago. Those three are the main men for Simeon, but there are a number of other talents on this deep roster. Jelani Neely '12, Kendrick Nunn '13, Tywon Pinckney '11, and DeShawn Greer '11 are all capable of picking up some slack.
44. United Faith Christian Academy (NC): A great deal of talent is gone from a team that vastly underachieved last year, but UFCA still has a trio of superb players who will take the floor this year. In Indiana-bound 7-footer Peter Jurkin and heady point guard Braxton Obgueze, UFCA is one of just five teams with two players ranked in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50. The other integral player for the squad will be Paris Roberts-Campell, a senior guard who is headed to East Carolina.
45. Bishop O'Dowd (CA): The heart and soul of this team is going to be Brandon Ashley, a forward who is ranked as the #4 player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50 and is one of the top players in America regardless of class. Ashley, a long, versatile, skilled prospect will form a dynamic frontcourt duo with fellow junior Richard Longrus. Two other juniors, Kendall Jackson and Daniel Jones, will be key backcourt players for O'Dowd.
46. Linn-Mar (IA): Easily the best team in the state of Iowa, Linn-Mar features big-time junior point guard Marcus Paige and senior wing Matt Bohannon, who is committed to Northern Iowa. Paige is an intelligent player who knows how to manage an offense, while Bohannon is a sharpshooter from beyond the arc. It will be tough for any team in the Hawkeye State to handle that tandem and tus Paige and Bohannon should be able to carry the team to a big season.
47. North Central (IN): With four talented players in the backcourt, including one of the best juniors in the nation, North Central will contend for the top spot in the state of Indiana. D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, a junior combo guard who has committed to Xavier, will be the go-to guy for the team and he is more than capable of carrying the load. Fellow juniors Pat Ingram and Ronnie Johnson as well as senior Dedric Griffin will lend support to Smith-Rivera.
48. Grace Prep (TX): This team is still one year away from its peak as the top two players are both juniors, but Grace Prep will be a big-time time in 09-10. Baylor-bound 7-footer Isaiah Austin is the #5 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50 and is a phenomenal inside-outside player. Jelon Hornbeak is another high-major Division I recruit in the junior class for the Lone State State team. Freshman Emmanuel Mudlay will team with Hornbeak in the backcourt.
49. Bloomington South (IN): A pair of senior guards committed to Division I schools and a junior big man are the three main players for this Hoosier State team that has had back-to-back great season. Dee Davis, who is headed to Xavier, is the top player for Bloomington South and will be the go-to player. Fellow senior Spencer Turner, a shooting gaurd who is committed to Belmont, is the other half of the team's backcourt. TJ Bell, a class of 2012 prospect, is the key player in the low post.
50. Jeffersontown (KY): The best team in the state of Kentucky is led by a pair of senior transfers who came from out-of-state schools in Louisville-bound big man Zach Price and wing Tony Kimbro. Price will be the key player for Jeffersontown and should be able to dominate down low just about every time out. The 2011 duo will be supported by a couple of juniors in Desmond Dorsey and football standout Daniel Ross.
