Kabongo Recommits to Texas; Cook Picks Duke

by Alex Schwartz

Thursday was all about point guards. A pair of top 20 prospects in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, both of whom are top five point guards, made their college commitments. One of them recommitted to a school he had decommitted from just days earlier.

Myck Kabongo of Findlay Prep (NV) reopened his recruitment on Saturday after having been committed to Texas for nearly 22 months. The #8 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150 opted to recommit to the Longhorns on Thursday in news first reported by Dave Telep of ESPN.

Kabongo, the number two point guard in his class, was expected to consider Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Syracuse along with Texas after opening his recruitment back up. A native of Canada who spent his first three years of high school at St. Benedict's (NJ), Kabongo decided to get back on board with the Longhorns instead.

Texas now has a four-man recruiting class again, featuring Kabongo, #48 Sheldon McClellan of Bellaire (TX), #101 ranked Julien Lewis of LaMarque (TX), and Jonathan Holmes of Antonian Prep (TX).

Some have speculated that the reason Kabongo opted to recommit to Texas was because Duke took a different point guard, but that will likely never be truly know. Later in the day on Thursday, Quinn Cook of Oak Hill Academy (VA), the #20 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, committed to the Blue Devils.

Cook's decision to pledge to the defending national champions had been expected. He selected Mike Krzyzewski and Co. over the UCLA Bruins. Cook is the fifth ranked point guard in the class of 2011.

With the addition of Cook, Duke now has a four-man recruiting class, as he joins #4 ranked Austin Rivers of Winter Park (FL), #19 ranked Michael Gbinije of Benedictine (VA), and #111 ranked Marshall Plumlee of Christ School (NC). Duke is one of just eight schools with four or more commitments from ranked players and one of just two schools—the other is Kentucky—with commitments from three or more top 20 prospects.

Now that Kabongo and Cook are both off the board, the top 14 ranked point guards in the nation have all made their college choices. In addition, all but one of the top 20 players regardless of position are now committed to a school. The best available point is Trevor Lacey of Butler (AL), who is #15 at the position and #56 overall in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011. The best uncommitted player in the nation is ex-Texas commit DeAndre Daniels of IMG Academy (FL), who is ranked #15.
