Quintet to BCS Schools; SEMO Scores Two; Decisions Upcoming

by Alex Schwartz

Considering how the last month or so has gone, it is no surprise that the flurry of commitments kept coming on both Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, a top 20 prospect in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50 made his commitment. Also on Sunday, a 2011 prospect committed to a BCS school. Then, on Monday three more seniors —one ranked in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150—pledged to schools in a BCS conference.

Also on Monday, two other seniors from the same city, including one who is ranked, popped to the same non-BCS school. Have a look at the rundown on these commitments, as well as some upcoming announcements, below.

The biggest name to make his verbal commitment on Monday was 6'9 center Tyler Adams of Brandon (MS). In news first reported by Evan Daniels of Scout, the one-time Duke commitment pledged to the Georgetown Hoyas. It took Adams only about a week and a half to go from decommitting from Duke to selecting Georgetown over Mississippi State.

Adams, the #59 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, is the third pledge for John Thompson III's program in the senior class. Adams joins a ranked prospect in #38 Mikael Hopkins of DeMatha (MD) as well as Jabril Trawick of Abington Friends (PA).

With Adams back off the board, just two ranked centers are still on the board. Those prospects are #46 Amir Williams of Detroit Country Day School (MI), the second ranked center, and #74 Kevin Johnson of Taft (CA), the seventh ranked center.

A pair of lesser known 2011 players also selected BCS programs on Monday, as did one on Sunday. According to multiple reports, 6'7 small forward Jamal Jones of Searcy (AR) opted to stay in SEC country and committed to Ole Miss. Also, 6'9 power forward Daniel Green of Grapevine (TX) selected Wake Forest, per reports. Northwestern received a commitment on Sunday from 6'8 power forward. Mike Turner of Chicago University HS (IL) according to reports.

For Ole Miss, Jones is the third commitment in the class of 2011. He joins Ladarius White of McComb (MS) and Aaron Jones of Gautier (MS) in coach Andy Kennedy's class. Ole Miss remains the only school in the SEC without a 2011 commitment from a player ranked in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150.

Daniel Green is the second verbal commitment in the class of 2011 for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The Lone Star State big man joins Chase Fischer of Ripley (WV) in first year head coach Jeff Bzdelik's class. Wake Forest is the only school in the ACC that does not have a 2011 commitment from a player ranked in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150.

Mike Turner is the third commitment for Northwestern in the class of 2011. He joins Tre Demps of Ronald Reagan (TX) and David Sobolewski out of Benet Academy (IL) in the Wildcats' recruiting class. All three players are somewhat under the radar.

There was no doubt which school pulled the biggest coup of the day, as a program in the Ohio Valley Conference received a commitment from a top 105 player. In news first reported by ESPN, 6'7 power forward Nino Johnson of White Station (TN) committed to Southeast Missouri State.

In addition to Johnson, the Redhawks also got a pledge from another Memphis native, 6'3 shooting guard Telvin Wilkerson of Melrose (TN).

Nino Johnson is the #103 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150. It is quite rare for a player of his caliber to select an OVC school and he will have a chance to be a star in the league. Johnson and Wilkerson are currently the only two members of SEMO's class.

On Sunday, one of the best big men in the class of 2012 came off the board. Hanner Perea of La Lumiere (IN) verbally committed to Tom Crean and the Indiana Hoosiers. The 6'8 power forward is the #15 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2012 Top 50.

Perea is the third highest ranked player in the junior class to come off the board and just the eighth ranked commitment overall. Of those eight, two are committed to Indiana. The Hoosiers and Pitt Panthers are the only schools with two commitments from ranked players in the class of 2012.

Indiana now has three commitments in the junior class. Perea joins #49 ranked Peter Jurkin of United Faith Christian Academy (NC) and Ron Patterson of Broad Ripple (IN). Perea and Jurkin are teammates on the AAU circuit with Indiana Elite/Team Indiana and were high school teammates last year at UFCA.

In addition to all of these recent commitments, half a dozen ranked players are expected to be making their announcements in the next two weeks.

According to ZagsBlog, 6'0 point guard Quinn Cook of Oak Hill Academy (VA) will announce his decision this week. The #20 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, Cook is down to Duke and UCLA, per ZagsBlog.

Washington (IN) 6'10 power forward Cody Zeller, the #25 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, has been down to Butler, Indiana, and North Carolina for quite some time. Jody Demling of courier-journal.com reports that Zeller is expected to commit before the early signing period begins on November 10.

TheShiver.com has reported that 6'4 small forward Ben McLemore of Oak Hill Academy (VA) has set Novemeber 15 as his announcement date. McLemore, a Missouri native, is the #37 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150. He is down to Georgia Tech, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio State, and Tennessee, according to TheShiver.com.

The #50 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, 6'3 shooting guard Dai-Jon Parker of Milton (GA), will be announcing in just a few days. Per UGASports.com, a Rivals affiliate, Parker will announce between Georgia, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Rhode Island, and Vanderbilt on November 5.

Indiana native Jeremiah Davis, a 6'2 point guard from Huntington Prep (WV), will make his decision the weekend of November 12, per NBE Basketball Report. The #106 ranked player in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, Davis has offers from Ball State, Cincinnati, Indiana, Purdue, and Xavier, according to NBE.

Tyler Harris of St. Benedict's (NJ), a 6'8 small forward who checks in at #130 in the NBE Post-Summer Class of 2011 Top 150, will be making his decision on November 5, according to multiple reports. Harris has a reported final three of Iowa, North Carolina State, and Providence.
