Sampson to St. John's; Commitment Catch-Up

by Alex Schwartz

First off, let me apologize for the lack of articles over the past few weeks. It has been a very hectic time for me and thus I have not been able to post much, but I am going to be getting back into the swing of things now.

The most major news since my last post came down today when JaKarr Sampson '11 of Brewster Academy (NH) committed to St. John's. Sampson, a versatile 6'7 small forward announced his intentions to play for the Red Storm on ESPNU this evening.

Sampson, who attended St. Vincent-St. Mary (OH) for his first three years of high school, is the probably best recruit to pick St. John's since Elijah Ingram in 2002, per Rivals and Scout rankings. Baylor, Louisville, and Tennessee were the other reported finalists for Sampson.

His commitment to the Big East program continues a trend of new STJ Head Coach Steve Levin landed top-notch recruits. Lavin landed Dwayne Polee of Westchester (CA) in the class of 2010 and already had a commitment from New York native Maurice Harkless of South Kent (CT) in this crop of rising seniors.

There have also been some other commitments of late, according to reports from multiple media outlets such as Scout, Rivals, ZagsBlog, and courier-journal.com. Have a look at the rundown below.

- NIA Prep (NJ) wing Shaq Thomas '11, the nephew of Tim Thomas, is headed to Cincinnati..

- Central Florida added to its already stellar 2011 recruiting class by picking up Wayne Martin of Providence School (FL).

- Houston snagged a talented in-state player when big man TaShawn Thomas '11 of Killeen (TX) popped to the Cougars.

- Remy Abell '11 of Eastern (KY) had a quality summer and is going to take his game to Bradley.

- DePaul added a second member of the Mac Irvin Fire squad when Macari Brooks '11 of Rich South (IL) pledged to the Blue Demons.

- Lake Central (IN) standout Glenn Robinson, Jr. '12, the son of the former NBA player, of will play at Michigan at the next level.

- Before even starting high school, James Blackmon '14 of Bishop Luers (IN) made his verbal commitment to Indiana, becoming the first player in his class to make a college decision.
