NBPA Top 100 Camp- Rockets & Spurs Scouting Reports
The 2010 NBPA Top 100 Camp featured some of the most highly-touted and highly-recruited players in the country, with
prospects coming from coast to coast. Even some of Canada's finest made the trip to the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena for the prestigious event. The players were broken down into 10 teams for the camp, each squad being named for an NBA franchise. In addition to my articles with school lists (Day One, Day Two, Day Three, and Day Four) and Top Scorers/Award Winners post,I will also have five separate pieces with scouting reports and evaluations from the NBPA Top 100 Camp. Each article will be for two of the 10 teams, going in alphabetical order (the two finalists will be together regardless) for the posts.
This fourth post is on the Rockets and Spurs, and will include players' heights, weights, wingspans, reaches, scoring output, and an evaluation. Here is the fourth installment of Northstar Basketball's NBPA Top 100 Camp scouting reports. To view my scouting report post on the Cavs and Celtics, click Here. Note: Height is without shoes on and all players played in six games unless otherwise noted.
ROCKETS
Naadir Tharpe ’11, PG, Brewster Academy (NH)
Height & Weight: 5’11, 160lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’4, 7’8
PPG & High: 7.8, 13
The former Providence commit had a really good showing at NBPA Camp, and in fact was the best I have ever seen him play firsthand. Tharpe is a point guard who can do a lot with the ball in his hands. He has a quality handle, can shoot and drive if need be, and also passes well.
Myles Mack ’11, PG, St. Anthony’s (NJ)
Height & Weight: 5’9, 154lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’2, 7’5.5
PPG & High: 5.7, 14
Mack was the second shortest player at NBPA Top 100 Camp, but he had a good showing nonetheless. Some have questioned whether Mack is a true point guard, but at this event, he definitely showed that he is able to distribute the basketball. A quality shooter from long range with a nice handle, Mack has developed into a legitimate high-major guard.
Amile Jefferson ’12, SF, Friends Central (PA)
Height & Weight: 6’7, 185lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 7’0, 8’5
PPG & High: 10.0, 15
Jefferson was the top scorer amongst all 2012 prospects at NBPA Top 100 Camp, an impressive feat. Jefferson scored in double-digits in four of his six games and more than held his own against bigger, stronger, older players. More of a four at this point, Jefferson has a chance to develop into a long, skilled three down the road, or could become a face-up four if he grows an inch or two. His long-term upside is extremely high and Jefferson has a chance to be one of the upper-echelon players in his class when all is said and done, as he rebounds well, is a good enough athlete, handles, runs the floor, and plays all out.
Byron Wesley ’11, SF, Etiwanda (CA), USC
Height & Weight: 6’4, 199lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’7, 8’3.5
PPG & High: 7.8, 11
Wesley had a good, but not great showing at NBPA Camp. He was more of a guy who was able to get things done, but did so in a quiet way. The future Southern Cal Trojan had some nice outings and was fairly consistent in his scoring output on a game to game basis.
Mike Shaw ’11, PF, De La Salle (IL)
Height & Weight: 6’8, 220
Wingspan & Reach: 6’10, 8’7
PPG & High: 4.2, 8
Shaw is highly-touted, but was not at his finest at NBPA Camp. He failed to notch double-digits in any game and only scored more than five points once. On a positive note, Shaw has a big frame and once he refines his body and skill set, he could be an impact guy.
Rodney Purvis ’13, SG, Upper Room Christian Academy (NC)
Height & Weight: n/a (was not measured)
Wingspan & Reach: n/a
PPG & High: 11.5, 17
Purvis was not only the high scorer amongst non-2011 players, but he managed to finish camp 11th in the scoring column, an extremely impressive feat. A big-time combo guard, Purvis is one of the very best players in the class of 2013 and has an extremely bright future. Purvis, who is listed at 6'2, can shoot the ball a bit, but he is best when driving to the cup off the bounce and finishing around the cup. He is also able to score when he draws contact. Purvis' game and skill set are advanced well beyond his years.
Zach Price ’11, C, St. Edward (OH), Louisville
Height & Weight: 6’10, 232lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 7’1, 9’1
PPG & High: 7.5, 11
Price has a big frame to along with a long reach, both of which allow him to be an effective rebounder around the bucket. Price is a solid scorer, though not overwhelming. He was up and down at the event, but his potential was certainly evident when he hit the floor.
Jabari Brown ’11, SG, Oakland (CA)
Height & Weight: 6’5, 203lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’8, 8’4
PPG & High: 10.8, 19
Brown was hot and cold out in Virginia, but when he was hot, he was on fire. When he gets going from beyond the arc, Brown is tough to stop. In addition to being a big-time shooter, Brown is also a quality athlete, and he showed flashes of that despite playing with an injury at camp. The fact that he finished top 20 in scoring and dropped 12+ in half his games despite being hurt speaks volumes for the level of player that Brown is. Granted, he did score seven or less three times as well, but Brown had a superb showing all things considered.
Ryan Taylor ’11, SF, Lawrence North (IN), Louisville
Height & Weight: 6’5, 207lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 7’1, 8’6
PPG & High: 4.8, 10
Taylor's scoring output was not particulary impressive as he only went over seven points one time, but despite that he put together a fairly impressive champ showing. Taylor's wingspan is phenomenal, and that allows him to do a superb job of rebounding the basketball. One of two Louisville commits on the Rockets, Taylor all showed that he plays hard at both ends of the floor. Do not let the point totals fool you too much on this one.
Height & Weight: 6’8, 251lbsWingspan & Reach: 7’1, 8’7
PPG & High: 9.5, 14
Stokes was another one of the impressive underclassmen that the Rockets had on their roster. Stokes was the third leading 2012 scorer, making it three of the top four non-2011 scorers were on this team. Stokes' frame is extremely strong and chiseled, especially when you consider that he is merely entering his junior year of high school. From a purely physique standpoint, Stokes was arguably the most impressive player in camp, regardless of class. In addition, he is long, has a bit of a face-up game, rebounds the ball, and can finish around the hoop. Interestingly, Stokes had 11+ in four games and less than five in the other two.
SPURS
Jordan Price ’12, SG, McCallie School (GA)
Height & Weight: 6’4.5, 238lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’9, 8’3.5
PPG & High: 3.8, 6
The Peach State star is considered one of the best players in the class of 2012, but he really struggled to get going at NBPA Camp. Price's jumpers were not falling and he seemed somewhat out of the offensive flow. Though he does need to shed a few pounds, Price has great length and a good enough handle. Despite the rough showing, he looks to be a nice long-term prospect.
Marquis Rankin ’11, PG, Hargrave Military Academy (VA), Virginia Tech
Height & Weight: 6’0, 161lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’5, 7’11
PPG & Height: 3.8, 12
Rankin only scored more than four points in one game and went scoreless in two others, though he did miss much of the action in one of those. Playing for his future high school coach on his camp team, Rankin showed some nice flashes at points, including good quickness to get to the cup. An extremely strong and well-built player, especially for a point guard, Rankin also has great length for a one and the North Carolina native will only get better with time.
Hunter Mickelson ’11, PF, Westside (AR), Arkansas
Height & Weight: 6’10, 189lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 7’0, 8’9.5
PPG & Height: 9.3, 18
Although the Rockets went winless, finishing 0-6, Mickelson is not to be blame for that. A thin power forward who would do well to add some bulk, Mickelson was one of the most impressive players at camp. He has a nice face-up game, including some nice athletic moves to score around the hoop. In addition, Mickelson rebounds the basketball and can put it on the deck a bit as well. He has a lot of long term potential and will keep improving, especially when he gets stronger.
Norman Powell ’11, SG, Lincoln (CA)
Height & Weight: 6’3.5, 199lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’11, 8’4.5
PPG & Height: 10.2, 18
From a physical standpoint—athleticism, frame, and length—Powell was one of the most impressive players in camp. A big-time leaper, Powell finished top 20 in scoring and dropped double figures in half his game. You would like it if he were an inch or two taller, but Powell is a big-time prospect anyway. He boosted his stock over the spring and backed it up with a great showing at NBPA Camp.
Tyrone Johnson ’11, PG, Plainfield (NJ)
Height & Weight: 6’2, 187lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’7, 8’2
PPG & Height: 9.7, 15
Johnson scored at least eight points in all but one of his games and had a stellar showing in Virginia. He is a true combo guard, as he is undersized for the two and is not a good enough shooter for the spot, but the Garden State native also does not distribute like a one. Despite the fact that he does not have a true position, there is no question that Johnson is a fine talent. A great athlete with a chiseled frame, Johnson handles well and gets to the cup with ease.
Michael Gbinije ’11, SF, Benedictine School (VA), Duke
Height & Weight: n/a (was not measured)
Wingspan & Reach: n/a
PPG & Height: 14.0, 16 (5gms)
Gbinije finished top seven in scoring at NBPA Top 100 Camp for the second consecutive year, as his average was good for fifth this time around. He was extremely consistent, scoring 15 or 16 points in four of the five games he played in, despite coming to Virginia from Team USA U18 Trials. Gbinije is listed at 6'7, so he has a nice size and solid athleticism on the wing, which helps him to be an effective scorer. Overall, he is one of the better players in the crop of rising seniors.
Aaron Ross ’11, SF, Parkview (AR), Arkansas
Height & Weight: 6’6, 220lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 6’11, 8’7
PPG & Height: 11.2, 24
The second players on the Rockets who plays AAU with Arkansas Wings Elite squad and has committed to the Razorbacks, Ross was better than I have seen him play in the past. A long small forward, Ross needs to improve upon his outside shot and also shed a few pounds, but he definitely has upside. Ross finished top 15 in scoring as he scored 14+ in half of his games, though in the other three he was under five. Thus, it is evident that Ross needs to improve upon his consistency, but his has some nice tools at his disposal.
Jordan Goodman ’12, PF, Progressive Christian Academy (MD), Rutgers
Height & Weight: n/a (was not measured)
Wingspan & Reach: n/a
PPG & Height: 5.5, 13
Goodman, who recently committed to Rutgers after decommitting from Georgetown just a few weeks earlier, is a player with outstanding long term potential. Goodman, listed at 6'9, is a big face-up four who can put the ball on the deck and is a good rebounder.
Michael Chandler ’11, C, Lawrence North (IN)
Height & Weight: 6’9, 246lbs
Wingspan & Reach: 7’0, 8’10
PPG & Height: 7.7, 14
Chandler is a big presence in the paint, but he does need to drop a few pounds so as to increase his mobility. The one-time Louisville commit has a good length and is a solid rebounder. Interestingly, he scored exactly eight points in his last four games after going for 14 and 0 in his first two. Chandler has a chance to be a big-time player at the collegiate level when he refines his body and all-around game.
Kevin Ware ’11, SG, Rockdale County (GA), Tennessee
Height & Weight: n/a (was not measured)
Wingspan & Reach: n/a
PPG & Height: 6.8, 11
Ware, who is listed at 6'4, is a great athlete with a frame that could add even more weight. He has the physical tools to be a quality collegiate player, but needs to put it all together. His outside shooting needs work, but Ware has a good handle and can get to the rack.
