McKinney-Jones Talks Miami Transfer

by Alex Schwartz

The University of Miami added a transfer for the second time in three off-seasons.

Trey McKinney-Jones, a 6-foot-4 205-pound sophomore guard from the University of Missouri-Kansas City will be joining the Hurricanes’ basketball program.

“Coach [Michael] Schwartz, the assistant, got on the phone with my dad and they got the coaching staff some game film and watched some highlights. I started talking to Coach Haith, got a pretty good relationship with him, and I came on my visit and really liked it and it just went from there. It was a good experience,” said the Wisconsin native on how he picked the Canes.

McKinney-Jones said that his other finalist was his home state Wisconsin Badgers, but he opted for the sunshine in South Florida.

“I just thought that my relationship with the coaching staff was a better fit for me and so was the offense that they run," he said.

Last year, his sophomore season at UMKC, McKinney-Jones was third on the team in points per game (10.9), second in assists (2.0), and fourth in rebounding (3.8). The Kangaroos finished 12-18 overall, going 6-12 in Summit League play. McKinney scored 12 or more points in 16 of the team’s 30 games, going for 20-plus twice.

“I just didn’t feel like that was the best place for me to be most successful with my basketball career so I got my release,” McKinney-Jones said.
