Lawhorn & McCallop to Prep; Laerke Going Overseas; Winston to VSU
by Alex Schwartz
Northstar Basketball broke a few stories yesterday via our Twitter page, and while none involved high-major commitments, they were also certainly newsworthy. A handful of class of 2010 prospects have made their decisions on what their next stop will be.
According to Vincent Robinson, Danny Lawhorn of South Kent (CT) and Jakarri McCallop of East Hartford (CT) will be heading to his first year prep school next year, The Robinson School (NJ). Lawhorn, a quick point guard, was committed to Boston College at one point, but the two sides had a mutual parting of ways. Lawhorn was then committed to Fordham, but recently reopened his
recruitment and will now be doing a post-grad year. McCallop, a solid post presence, has never made a college choice and going the post-grad route will likely help him garner more interest. Both players will now be class of 2011 prospects.
Robinson, who was previously the coach at NIA Prep (NJ), is assembling a quality roster at The Robinson School. Niagara-signee Shaq Duncan of Frankford (PA) will be going to The Robinson School instead of the MAAC school. A 6'8 center, Duncan will likely be completely reopening his recruitment, though that remains to be seen. Isiah Williams of Shabazz (NJ) will be at The Robinson School too. Williams had been at NIA, but then transferred to Shabazz and will now be playing for Robinson again. He is an athletic 6'7 combo forward.
Other players who will be at The Robinson School next year include shooting guard Sahid Dortch of University (NJ), big man Larry Brown of Curtis (NY), and wing Rashawn Stores from Ocean Academy (NJ). Robinson has high hopes for his program's first year in existence. "Hopefully we'll win a prep national championship," he said.
Speaking of national championships, Findlay Prep (NV) fell just short of its second consecutive crown this past year, finishing 32-2 and ranked fourth in my Final National High School Top 25. A key reserve on that team was 6'4 shooting guard Thomas Laerke '10, who saw his role increase as the season went along, especially once San Francisco-bound Marko Petrovic '10 got hurt.
Laerke likely would have been able to play low-major Division I basketball next year, but is opting to go another route. "He will play professional in Europe, he decided. His mother is not well, [and he] wants to be back there," said a source close to the situation. According to the official Findlay Prep website, Laerke is from Copehhagen, Denmark.
Rico Winston graduated from Jericho Christian Academy (MD) in the class of 2009 and then went to Cecil College, a JuCo in Maryland, so as to increase his college options, and the decision has paid off. Winston has committed to Virginia State, a Division II school, and will be entering as a sophomore.
Winston also considered Western Illinois, Coppin State, and Norfolk State, which was the only of those three to extend a scholarship offer. Asked how he decided on Virginia State, Winston replied, "It's in a good conference (CIAA) and I felt Coach George White can be a great coach for me and get me ready for the next level. I felt like I was a good fit for that rebuilding team and I loved the campus when I went on my visit."
The Old Line State native is happy to have the decision behind him, saying, "It feels good to know where I'm going and that my education is paid for and I don't have to be worried during the summertime." Winston is not only fully qualified, allowing him to play next year, but said he "has been on the National Honor Society the last two years".
