News & Notes

- Today is the first day of the late signing period and that means the final pieces of the class of 2010 will begin to fall. Three members of Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125 will be announcing their college choices today, all on ESPNU. Brandon Knight, a 6'3 point guard from Pine Crest (FL) who is currently ranked #1 will pick between Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Syracuse, and UConn. The Wildcats are a heavy favorite, though the Gators and Huskies have an outside shot. Currently at #37, 6'1 point guard Ray McCallum of Detroit Country Day School (MI) will select from Arizona, Detroit, Florida, and UCLA. Detroit, where his father Ray McCallum, Sr. is the head coach is believed to be his choice. Mount Pleasant (MI) 6'4 shooting guard Trey Zeigler, who is ranked #45, is deciding between a number of schools, including Central Michigan, Duke, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, and UCLA. The Chippewas are expected to land him, as his father, Ernie Zeigler, is the head coach.
- Even though three highly-touted seniors are committing tomorrow, it is a junior whose
announcement will be the most anticipated. Michael Gilchrist '11 of St. Patrick's (NJ), the best player in America regardless of class, is surprisingly announcing his college choice tomorrow. The 6'7 combo forward will listed six schools when I spoke with him in February : Georgia Tech, Michigan, Oregon, Kentucky, Texas, and Villanova. The superstar from the Garden State is expected to choose between Kentucky and Villanova, who have long been rumored to have a leg up on the competition. Kentucky is the consensus favorite here, though Villanova does have a shot.
- In addition to the three elite seniors announcing today, two more will come off the board on Saturday at the Jordan Brand Classic. Currently ranked #6 in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, 6'2 combo guard Josh Selby of Lake Clifton (MD) will pick from Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and UConn. A one-time Tennessee pledge, Selby is a considered a heavy lean and there he will likely be choosing the Jayhawks. Also announcing at the JBC is #13 Doron Lamb, a 6'4 shooting guard from Oak Hill Academy (VA). The New York City native is considering four of the same schools as Selby in Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, and UConn, but also has West Virginia on his list, and St. John's may be involved too. Kansas is considered the leader here, but Lamb's recruitment is tough to read and Arizona, Kentucky, and West Virginia all have legitimate chances.
- After the Jordan Brand Classic on the 17th, assuming both Selby and Lamb do indeed commit, three McDonald's All-Americans will still be on the board in #20 6'8 PF Terrence Jones of Jefferson (OR), #22 6'8 PF CJ Leslie of Word of God Academy (NC), and #25 6'3 PG Cory Joseph of Findlay Prep
(NV). All three prospects will move up when I release my final Terrific 125 in the next few weeks. Jones is considering Kentucky, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, and UCLA. The Wildcats and Huskies are considered the frontrunners, and it looks like Washington may win out in this one. Leslie has about five schools in contention in Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina State, Oregon, and UConn. Leslie was at one point committed to NC State and this is basically a two horse race between the Wolfpack and the Wildcats. It is tough to tell who has the edge, but Kentucky may be able to land him when all is said and done. Cory Joseph lists Minnesota, Texas, UConn, UNLV, and Villanova. It is going to come down to Minnesota, Texas, and Villanova, with the Longhorns and Wildcats regarded as the main contenders. With all the connections to UT, there is a strong chance Joseph ends up in Austin.
- Besides all the aforementioned players, there are six other ballers currently ranked in the Terrific 125 that are still on the board. The players are #60 6'6 SF Terrence Ross of Jefferson (OR), #62 6'8 PF Luke Cothron of Flora MacDonald Academy (NC), #95 6'7 SF Dwayne Polee of Westchester (CA), #111 6'9 PF Cody Larson of Roosevelt (SD), #116 6'8 PF Jonathan Graham of Calvert Hall College HS (MD), and #119 6'3 PG Jelani Hewitt over Northeast (FL). Ross is a one-time Maryland pledge, Cothron was committed to North Carolina State until recently, Polee had been committed to USC, and Larson was recently let out of his LOI to Iowa.
