Admitting My Mistake; NJ, NY, PA State Champions

by Alex Schwartz

- When I make a mistake, I admit it. If that mistake happens to come right here on Northstar Basketball, then I will own up to what I was wrong on. In my College Commitment Projections- March Edition, Part 1 I predicted the college destinations of the seven uncommitted McDonald's All-Americans. While this is obviously not a perfect science, I try my best to be as accurate as possible. From what I had heard, Kansas was looking like it would be the schools of choice for Ray McCallum '10, despite reports out there that his list was cut down. Since then I have found out that my information was incorrect and the Jayhawks are not in play. While I have of course gotten projections incorrect in the past, this is one that I felt it was worth mentioning would be wrong, as I know some people were wondering about it. I admit my mistake, and apologize for the confusion that it created.

- As I previously mentioned, in New Jersey, University won the Group I championship over Woodbury, Shabazz claimed the Group II title over Pequannock, Mendham won Group III over Kingsway Regional, Cherokee took home the Group IV trophy over Plainfield, Camden Catholic was the Non-Public A champion over St. Peter's Prep, and Trenton Catholic won the Non-Public B title over St. Anthony's. In the Tournament of Champions opening round, #3 seed University beat #6 Mendham and #4 Cherokee knocked off #5 Shabazz. In the semifinals, #1 Camden Catholic got revenge on a Cherokee for a regular season loss and #2 Trenton Catholic beat University. Trenton Catholic then knocked off Camden Catholic for the TOC crown.
The other Group I sectional champions were Asbury Park and Cresskill, while Collingswood and Science Park were the other Group II sectional champions. The other Group III sectional champions were NV Old Tappan and Lakewood and  the other Group IV sectional champions were East Orange and Montgomery

- In New York hoops, the season has come to an end as well. The Class B state champions were Westhill, Queens HS of Teaching, Collegiate, and St. Mary's. In the NY State Federation Class B Tournament of Champions, Queens HS of Teaching beat Westhill in the semis and Collegiate defeated St. Mary's. Collegiate then knocked off Queens HS of Teaching to win the TOC title. In Class A ball, the state champions were Jamesville-DeWitt, Bedford Academy, Nichols School, and Long Island Lutheran. J-D beat Bedford in one semifinal of the TOC and Nichols eliminated LuHi in the other. Nichols then beat J-D for the TOC championship. The Class AA state champions were Christian Brothers Academy (Albany), Christ the King, and Boys & Girls. CTK beat CBA in the semifinals while B&G got a bye in the TOC championship. CTK then defeated B&G to win the Class AA TOC.

- The Pennsylvania high school hoops season came to a close this weekend with the PIAA state championships. On Friday, Sewickley Academy defeated Reading Central Catholic to win the Class A crown while Neumann-Goretti trumped Chartiers Valley for the Class AAA title. The next day, South Fayette upset Strawberry Mansion for the Class AA championship and then Plymouth-Whitemarsh avenged an earlier loss and beat Penn Wood for the Class AAAA trophy. Pennsylvania does not have a Tournament of Champions.
