by Alex Schwartz

To read my recap of the the Sunday afternoon games at the Prime Time Shootout, click Here. Below are interviews and school lists that I got during those three games at the Sun National Bank Center.

Chandler Fraser-Pauls ’11, The Pennington School (NJ): Vermont, Florida Atlantic, Lafayette, Holy Cross, Cornell, Wagner, Columbia, Penn, Bucknell, Lehigh, Elon, Davidson, Brown, Rider, and Iona
                                            Offers: None
Favorites: “No, not at this point.”
Note- Fraser-Pauls is also being recruited by numerous Division I soccer programs.

Joseph Uchebo ’12, Oak Ridge Military Academy (NC), North Carolina State
Uchebo, a 6’11 center, has been in the US for “a year and some months” after coming over from Nigeria. He has only been playing basketball for three years—“because of the opportunity for basketball I switched” from soccer”—and is already committed to North Carolina State. How did he decide on the Wolfpack? “I picked NC State because I like to be there and I like it out here in North Carolina.” Uchebo said it was at a “workout with the CP3 [All-Stars, his AAU team, that] they saw me play” and it went from there. The big man is seemed to be still getting used to the English language.

Jay Canty ’10, Oak Ridge Military Academy (NC), Xavier
Canty, a member of Northstar Basketball’s Class of 2010 Terrific 125, has signed with Xavier, picking the Musketeers over Virginia Commonwealth,
Boston College, Florida, High Point, Appalachian State, UNC-Greensboro, and Virginia Tech. “It’s a good opportunity, I’m glad I made that choice. I like the coach and the players and there’s a good atmosphere,” said Canty on how he picked Xavier. Chris Mack, the head coach of the A-10 power, was there on Sunday watching Canty play. “It felt really good [that he was here], helped me get used to next year.” Canty has a good relationship with two other members of Xavier’s quality 2010 recruiting class. “Me and Jordan Latham and Justin [Martin], we talk a lot, catch up on a regular basis.”

Canty ,who was named Most Outstanding Player in his team’s loss to St. Anthony’s (NJ) on Saturday with 21 points, talked about how the team pulled away with a slim 60-58 over Nichols School (NY) on Sunday. “We didn’t shoot free throws as well today, so we had to lock up on defense.” Canty blocked Virginia-signee Will Regan ’10 in the final seconds, and that led to his teammate and Cal football-bound Chris McCain ’10 hitting a jumper as time expired to get the win.

Corey Edwards ’11, Christ the King (NY): St. John’s, George Mason, Villanova, Virginia Commonwealth, Auburn, and West Virginia
Offers: St. John’s, George Mason, Virginia Commonwealth, and Auburn
                                 Favorites: “Not really”
Note- On when he plans to make a college decision, Edwards  said, “Probably next year, my senior year.”

Omar Calhoun ’12, Christ the King (NY): North Carolina, Villanova, Kentucky, UConn, Florida, Louisville, Seton Hall, St. John’s, UCLA, and Rutgers
Offers: Villanova, Louisville, St. John’s, and Rutgers
Favorites: Calhoun has no favorites, but said if he had to sign tomorrow it would be with “Villanova actually”
Note- If you want to read more about my talk with Calhoun, who stated that he “might decide at . . . the end if the AAU season”, go to my VUSports.com article right Here.

Tavon Sledge ’11, Half Hollow Hills West (NY): West Virginia, UConn, Virginia Tech, Hofstra, Providence, and Villanova
                              Offers: Hofstra
                              Favorites: None
Notes- On why he transferred from St. Benedict’s (NJ) to Half Hollow Hills West, Sledge commented, “It was all about academics, not that much about basketball. The academic program here is better for me, and I felt better about going to college from here.” Sledge said that plans to make his college choice “this coming November”.
