Prime Time Shootout Saturday Night Rundown
by Alex Schwartz
As I mentioned in my Prime Time Shootout Saturday Afternoon Rundown, the day started with a big-time performance from Syracuse-bound Dion Waiters '10 and ended with one from Doron Lamb '10. Waiters' display in game one of the day was recapped in that article, as were the other three Saturday afternoon games. Below is a rundown of the three night games that were played at the Sun National Bank Center on Saturday.
St. Anthony's (NJ) vs. Oak Ridge Military Academy (NC)
St. Anthony's was supposed to face Montrose Christian (MD) in this game, but the snow prevented Stu Vetter's team from making the trip for New Jersey for the event. Thus, the Friars played Oak Ridge Military Academy instead, as the Cadets were already in town for their previously scheduled game the next day.
The game was close for a half, but Bob Hurley's team slowly pulled away in the third before slamming the door shut on any possible comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. When the final buzzer sounded, the home state team had a 63-46 victory.
St. Bonaventure-signee Eli Carter '10 (pictured), a 6'1 point guard, scored 49.2% of his team's points in the win. Carter ended the game with 31 points, including five threes. He is going to be a major impact player for the Bonnies from day one and is a major steal for Mark Schmidt. Carter was a late bloomer, coming on the summer after his junior year, but at thus point he is a definite Big East/ACC caliber player. Carter is a knockdown shooter from beyond the arc, but if you play him close he can drive right by you and get to the rim. In addition, he distributes the ball well. He was named Most Outstanding Player for his performance. Two other standouts for the Friars were 6'8 power forward and Oregon State-signee Devon Collier '10 and 6'6 power forward Jerome Frink '12. Collier showed his skill at blocking shots with his terrific length and also ran the floor pretty well. Frink also blocked some shots and has a frame and skill level that could make him special down the road. Only a sophomore, Frink is already getting major minutes at the tradition-rich program.
For Oak Ridge Military Academy, Xavier-signee Jay Canty '10, a 6'5 small forward, was named MOP. Canty poured in 21 points for the Cadets, connecting on all four of his free throw attempts. North Carolina State-bound 6'11 center Joseph Uchebo '12 and 6'7 power forward Jacob Lawson '11 were solid in the post, but did not wow in this particular game. Uchebo is nearly 7-feet tall and has a great frame, but is quite raw at this point. Lawson is a great athlete and has a lot of upside, but is still putting all the pieces together,
St. Patrick's (NJ) vs. Rice (NY)
After a heartbreaking 79-78 loss to Oak Hill Academy (VA) on Friday night, the Celtics came storming out of the gates Saturday evening. A mere seven-point lead through one quarter became an 18-point cushion at the half, and St. Patrick's never looked back in its rout over Rice. Kevin Boyle's team won 74-56 over a talented Rice team, limiting two of the Raiders' big three to single digits, while the Garden State squad's terrific duo combined for 39 points. It was
a great bounce-back win for St. Pat's, which received major punishments from the NJSIAA in addition to losing on Friday.
Michael Gilchrist '11 (pictured on left) showed once again why he is the best player in the nation regardless of class, scoring 18 points and grabbing 8 rebounds (2 offensive) in the big win. He would have had more, but Boyle put in the St. Pat's backups for the majority of the fourth quarter, as the game was well in hand. Gilchrist was an impressive 7/10 from the field, though he did struggle (4/9 FT, 44.4%) at the stripe. The 6'7 combo forward added 2 blocks and was fantastic in the game, earning Most Outstanding Player honors for the second straight game at the PTS. Though Gilchrist was the MOP, Duke-bound 6'2 point guard Kyrie Irving '10 was the Celtics' high scorer with 21 points. Irving went 7/17 (41.2%) from the field and 6/6 at the line, in addition to grabbing 8 boards (4 offensive), dishing out 4 assists, and getting 4 steals. The future Blue Devil also had the moment of the game, when he did a crossover and literally made the defender fall, garnering a huge roar from the crowd.
Rising star Austin Colbert '13, a 6'8 center, had a superb game for St. Pat's. The long and lanky freshman had 4 points (2/3 FG), 6 rebounds (2 offensive), 1 block, and 1 assist in limited playing time. Still relatively raw, Colbert has a good work ethic and a nice feel for the game. He has a chance to be the next star to come from the St. Patrick's program. Western Kentucky-commit Derrick Gordon '11 missed two free throws with 0.4 left on the clock the previous night, but he was able to put that behind him and play a solid game. The 6'3 shooting guard had 8 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal in the victory. In addition, he should be commended for shooting much better at the line on Saturday (4/8) than he did on Friday (1/7). Reserve 6'2 wing Chris Gibson '10 does not get much playing time for St. Pat's, but he played around 6 minutes in this game and made the most of it. Gibson was actually fourth on the team in points with 6, going 1/2 from the field and 4/4 at the line. Gibson should be getting some nice looks from DIII and maybe DII schools.
Rice generally relies on a trio of stars, in 6'8 power forward Kadeem Jack '10, Kansas State-bound 6'6 combo guard Shane Southwell '10, and 6'5 small forward Jermaine Sanders '11 (pictured on right), but only one reach double-digits against St.
Patrick's. Jack really struggled in the paint despite the Celtics' lack of a true post player in the rotation. A high-major recruit, Jack finished with 8 points on 3/11 (27.3%) shooting from the field and 2/3 shooting at the line, along with 5 rebounds (1 offensive), 3 turnovers, and 1 block. He took a few shots that were way off the mark, including a jumper or two. Jack is young for his grade and has great length and potential, but he showed on this night that he is still new to the game. Southwell had just 4 points against the Celtics, going 1/5 (20%) from the field and 2/2 from the line. Generally a great passer, Southwell did not have an assist, though he did turn the ball over three times. Jermaine Sanders was the lone member of three who had a good game and he was named MOP. Sanders scored 18 points, shooting 2/5 (40%) beyond the arc and 6/6 at the charity stripe. Sanders did not have a spectacular moments, but the sturdy scorer had a nice all-around game and is a definite high-major recruit.
Three other players had solid outings for Moe Hicks' team: 6'1 point guard Dashawn Suber '12, 6'2 shooting guard Jack Middleton '10, and 6'1 point guard Kevin Perez '10. Suber is going to be a quality player down the road, as the sophomore drives to the cup without any hesitation and has a nice overall game. He finished with 4 points, 5 rebounds (1 offensive), and 2 steals in the game. Middleton only played late in the game when the reserves came in, but maybe he should have been getting more time. The senior was 2/2 from the field and had 4 points, more than holding his own on the floor. Perez scored 5 points, which was actually the third highest total for the Raiders. He went 2/3 from the field, including 1/2 beyond the arc, adding 2 rebounds, both of which were offensive.

St. Peter's Prep (NJ) vs. Oak Hill Academy (VA)
Not only was this not supposed to be the game of the day, this was not even expected to be a particularly close contest. Oak Hill Academy, coming off of a huge 1-point win over St. Patrick's less than 24 hours earlier, was looking to defeat a pair of Garden State private schools at the PTS and rise back into the mythical national championship race as a dark horse. For St. Peter's Prep, it was a chance to make a national statement by beating a powerhouse program. Maybe the Warriors had used all their energy the previous night, maybe they did not expect to be in a
tight game with SPP, or maybe they just were not ready to play, but whatever the reason, OHA was defeated 84-81 by the Marauders. A massive upset that drastically impacted the national rankings, St. Peter's Prep did something that St. Patrick's had not been able to do either the previous night or last year in beating Steve Smith's team.
St. Peter's Prep was led by an inside-outside attack of St. John's-bound 6'7 power forward Ron Roberts '10 and 6'2 shooting guard Myles Davis '11 (pictured on left). That duo combined for 56 of the Marauders' 84 points, exactly two-thirds of the toal. Roberts nearly had a double-double finishing with 23 points and 9 rebounds (2 offensive). The future Big East player was 9/14 (64.3%) from the field, connecting on his lone three-point attempt, and also making 4/6 at the line. Roberts added 3 blocks and 1 assist. He was fantastic in the paint, grabbing rebounds, blocking and altering shots, and just providing a physical presence. Roberts is a great pickup for Norm Roberts. As good as Roberts was, Myles Davis was absolutely spectacular. The junior sharpshooter had 33 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound, and 1 steal. Davis was an incredible 8/12 (66.7%) on threes, with his eight trifectas tying a Prime Time Shootout single game record. The junior also went 9/9 at the line and was the key player in SPP's upset win. He missed a few minutes of action in the third quarter after taking an elbow to the face, but came back stronger than ever and was named Most Outstanding Player. Davis showed that he has the shooting ability to play at the highest level, though he might be a bit undersized.
Kevin Walker '11 was superb in running the point for the Marauders, and chipped in with 12 points, 2 assists, and 4 steals in the victory. The 5'10 Walker went 4/5 (80%) from the field and 4/4 at the line. Stephon Whyatt '11, a 6'0 guard, was solid down the stretch for Mike Kelly's team and finished the game with 4 points, as he made all 4 of his free throw attempts. He also had 2 assists and 1 rebound. Huge 6'9 center Keith Lumpkin '11 scored just 4 points on 1/2 (50%) shooting, but his 8 rebounds were key, especially the 5 that came on the offensive glass.
While Myles Davis led his team to victory and was outstanding, he was not even the best player on the floor. That
honor would go to McDonald's All-American 6'4 shooting guard Doron Lamb '10 (pictured on right). who was actually the player that elbowed Davis (no foul was called). Lamb finished the game with a ridiculous 49 points, 5 rebounds (2 offensive), and 1 assist en route to MOP honors. He was lights-out from the get-go, scoring at will for the entire game. Lamb shot an insane 21/29 (72.4%) from the field and made 5/8 (62.5%) from outside the arc. Almost all of his points came off of jumpers, which made the stat line that much more impressive. Lamb not only put nearly half a hundred points on the board, but did so in an efficient way, as his shooting percentage shows. Lamb's 49 points were good for 60.5% of Oak Hill's offensive output. In addition, the 49 is second all-time in Prime Time Shootout history for single game scoring, three fewer than LeBron James' 52 in 2002.
Besides Lamb, Maryland-commit Pe'Shon Howard '10 had 11 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. The 6'2 point guard was solid throughout the game, but was not quite as good as he was on Friday night. Dayton-signee Juwan Staten '10, a 5'11 point guard, had 8 points on 4/6 (66.7%) shooting and 2 assists. Baye Moussa Keita '10, a 6'10 center who has signed with Syracuse, chipped in 5 points on 2/2 shooting from the field along with 1/1 at the line, but his main contribution was his 9 rebounds (1 offensive) and 2 blocks. Massive 7'1 center Martins Abele '10 had 4 points (2/2 FG) and 2 rebounds (1 offensive) in limited minutes. UConn-commit Roscoe Smith '10, a 6'8 wing, really struggled in this one. He finished with 4 points, 3 blocks, and 2 rebounds (1 offensive). Smith was just 2/10 (20%) from the field and missed all 3 of his shots from beyond the arc. This came a day after having 18 points and 10 boards.
This game was fantastic and truly came down to the wire. SPP was up 40-39 at the half and a pair of late third quarter threes by Davis, including a buzzer beater, gave St. Peter's Prep a five-point lead, 64-59, entering the final period of play. It then looked like OHA would squash any hopes of an SPP upset when it opened the final quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 69-66 lead along with all the momentum, but Davis drained yet another three to even the game at 69 and it was back to square one. With 1:45 to go it was SPP 73, OHA 72, and it was clear the game would have a great finish.
The Marauders extended their lead to three, 75-72, with 1:08 to go. Then came a huge play. Stephon Whyatt tipped the ball away from Pe'Shon Howard into the hands of Myles Davis with 52.1 on the clock, giving SPP possession to go along with its three-point lead. Davis sank two free throws with 37.4 to go, making it a two-possession game. Doron Lamb then showed some signs of being human as he had a shot blocked, got the ball back and missed a jumper. At the other end, Kevin Walker nailed a pair of free throws with 24.9 to play and with a seven-point lead it looked like SPP had all but pulled the upset. Then Doron Lamb went back to superhuman form. The uncommitted senior nailed a three with 17.5 to go, cutting the lead back to four. Walker then made two free throws with 15.8 left, but Lamb responded with another trey, and it was 81-78 with 9.8 to go, once again a one-possession game. A pair of free throws from Davis made it a five-point game with 8 seconds to go. Lamb then made it back-to-back-to-back threes in the course of 16.1 seconds as he drilled a trifecta to cut the lead to two, 83-81, with 1.4 to go. Ron Roberts stepped to the stripe with 0.8 to go, needing one to make it a three-point game and two to all but seal the deal. Roberts missed the first shot, but the second one was good at it was 84-81. The Oak Hill inbounds pass was tipped away and St. Peter's Prep had scored the incredible upset, leading to a nice celebration on the floor and an even crazier celebration in the SPP student section at Sun National Bank Center.
The Marauders won this game at the free throw line and from beyond the arc. St. Peter's Prep was an astounding 24/27 from the line, good for 88.9%, a number that is almost unheard of at any level of basketball. Meanwhile, Oak Hill Academy went just 5/11 from the line, a pedestrian 45.5%. In addition, while Lamb did all he could in scoring 49 points, he was only 2/6 (33.3%) at the line. Also, St. Peter's Prep was 10/19 on threes for a crazy 52.6%, while OHA was 6/18 (33.3%). Even though OHA had a better field goal percentage (57.4% to 51.0%) and made 10 more shots, SPP's shooting at the line and from beyond the arc won the game for the Garden State team.

Patrick's had not been able to do either the previous night or last year in beating Steve Smith's team.St.
In addition, the 49 is second all-time in Prime Time Shootout history for single game scoring, three fewer than LeBron James' 52 in 2002.Besides Lamb, Maryland-commit Pe'Shon Howard '10 had 11 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.
