Prime Time Shootout Friday Night Interviews & School Lists

by Alex Schwartz

I had a chance to speak with a number of players on Friday night at the Prime Time Shootout. To read my recap of the games, click Here, and to check out the interviews/schools lists, just read below.

Jarrod Davis ’11, Lakewood (NJ): Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia Tech, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. Joseph’s, Syracuse, West Virginia, Georgetown, North Carolina, Tennessee, St. John’s, South Florida, Maryland, “and others”
Offers: Virginia Tech, Providence, Seton Hall, St. Joseph’s, St. John’s, and South Florida
Favorites: None

Gilvydas Biruta ’10, St. Benedict’s (NJ), Rutgers
Biruta, a 6’8 power forward who came to the US from Lithuania on August 4, 2008 and has been playing basketball his whole life, has signed with Rutgers. He also considered Davidson and Harvard. Asked how he decided on the Scarlet Knights, Biruta replied, “I liked it there, it’s in New Jersey. I like the area, I like the coach and the atmosphere he creates with the players, and the opportunity to play in the Big East and check my game.” On what his goals are for his freshman year, Biruta said, “I’m trying to make good [steps forward], get stronger to physically play against tougher guys.” Before reaching RU, there is one thing Biruta still wants to accomplish at St. Benedict’s. “Just be in the number one spot in the country.”

Xavier Munford ’10, St. Benedict’s (NJ): Marist, Fordham, and St. Peter’s
Offers: All
Favorite: “Fordham is the only one I’m really considering.”
Note- Munford is considering going to prep school and his options as of now are Brewster Academy (NH), NIA Prep (NJ), and New Hampton Prep (NH). “I’m gonna see at the end of the year, see how it plays out,” said Munford.

Kyrie Irving ’10, St. Patrick’s (NJ), Duke
Irving, who has signed with Duke, had 28 points (11/20 FG, 5/9 3P, 1/2 FT) and 5 assists in a 79-78 loss to Oak Hill Academy (VA) en route to sharing Most Outstanding Player honors, but was disappointed the team picked up its third loss. “It was tough game, a tough loss, we had a chance,” commented Irving. The 6’2 point guard had the ball as time was running out, but he kicked it out to Western Kentucky-commit Derrick Gordon ’11, who was fouled with 0.4 to play and missed both free throws. He talked about the last set of the game. “I think at the end of the game I didn’t have a problem passing off. I have trust in all my teammates. People were saying I’m a combo guard, but I’m a true point guard.”Although Irving, understandably, did not want to talk about the recent sanctions given to the Celtics, he did discuss what it means to be a McDonald’s All-American. “It’s a great honor, especially to come from St. Pat’s. I’m gonna represent Ronald McDonald and also St. Pat’s.” On attending Duke next year, Irving remarked, “You know, I’m excited, I’m looking forward to it. Coach K [Mike Krzyzewski] has great expectations for me. It’s gonna be fun.”

Doron Lamb ’10, Oak Hill Academy (VA): Kansas, Kentucky, UConn, West Virginia, and Arizona
Offers: All
Favorites: None
Notes- Lamb, who plans to commit in April, is looking for “a good program [that has] a good coach where I can play right away”. On recent addition to his final list, Lamb said, “I talked to [UConn Head Coach Jim] Calhoun [on Thursday] and he said he’s back and he’ll be there for five more years.” For more on my talk with Lamb go at NBE Basketball Report, just click Here.

Tyrone Johnson ’11, Plainfield (NJ): Georgetown, Villanova, “mostly the Big East, the ACC, a little Big Ten”
Offers: Georgetown, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John’s, and Villanova
Favorites: Johnson has no favorites, but said that Georgetown, Villanova, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Indiana, and Virginia Tech are “doing a real good job recruiting” him.
