News & Notes

- The #1 ranked player in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, 6'3 point guard Brandon Knight '10 of Pine Crest (FL), was indeed on an official visit at Miami this weekend. A source close to the situation confirmed that Knight, who is considering six schools, arrived at the Coral Gables campus on Friday and was set to leave today. Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, UConn, and Syracuse are still in play for Knight, the hands-down best available player in the nation.
- St. Benedict's (NJ) pulled the upset of St. Patrick's (NJ) last night at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Texas-bound Myck Kabongo '11, a Northstar Basketball player diary writer, went coast to coast and scored with five seconds top go win the game for the Gray Bees. After losing the first six meeting between the two powerhouses, St. Benedict's has now won two of the last three. St. Patrick's was without Michael Gilchrist '11, the best player in America regardless of class, as he was out of state. Danny Hurley's team won by a final score of 65-64. Somehow I picked the Gray Bees' point total, 65, correctly, though I did have St. Pat's winning in my game preview.
- With the Celtics' loss to St. Benedict's, there is now a new clear #1 team in New Jersey, in Paterson Catholic. The Cougars are undefeated and have wins over big-time programs such as Penn Wood (PA), Montverde Academy (FL), Winter Park (FL), Huntington Prep (WV), and NIA Prep (NJ). Meanwhile, St. Pat's has two losses and St. Benedict's has one. The Gray Bees' loss came to Winter Park in the semifinals at the City of Palms, and PC then beat Winter Park to win the tournament. The Cougars are in the same section as both St. Patrick's and St. Anthony's for the NJSIAA tournament.
- Yates (TX), the #4 ranked team in the 1/14 edition of my National High School Top 25, has been causing a lot of controversy lately. Led by Providence-bound Joseph Young '10, the Lone Star State team has been dominating its opponents, routinely scoring upwards of 125 points while giving up under 50. There have been some instances of supposed attempts at running up the score, and articles on this can be seen Here (Houston Chronicle), and Here (Rivals High).
