News & Notes

by Alex Schwartz

- Terrence Ross '10 of Montrose Christian (MD), the #73 ranked player in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, has officially decommitted from Maryland after not signing with the Terrapins in November. Ross, according to reports, is now considering Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas in addition to Maryland.

- Within days of Ross' decommitment from Maryland, Gary Williams got a commitment from another talent player in combo guard Pe'Shon Howard of Oak Hill Academy (VA). Howard, who at one point was considered a near lock for Harvard, is the fourth member of Maryland's class of 2010. He joins Mychal Parker of The Miller School (VA), Terrell Stoglin of Santa Rita (AZ), and Ashton Pankey of St. Anthony's (NJ).

- Fordham Interim Head Coach Jared Grasso landed two commitments on Monday, according to ZagsBlog. First Sean Armand '10 of CJEOTO Academy (NJ) selected the Rams and then Jayon James from Paterson Catholic (NJ) decided on the Atlantic-10 school. James was an Honorable Mention in my list of New Jersey's Fab 45 Upperclassmen.

- In the first big-time Garden State showdown of the season, Paterson Catholic defeated St. Peter's Prep by 20 on Sunday night. PC began the season #3 in my New Jersey Preseason High School Top 20, while St. Peter's Prep checked in at #5. Both schools also opened the season ranked in my National Preseason High School Top 100. On that list, Paterson Catholic was #34 and St. Peter's Prep was #99, but PC has moved up to #8 in my latest national rankings, second in NJ. SPP is the favorite to win the NJSIAA Non-Public A state championship, while PC will be in the mix for the Non-Public B crown.

- Multiple reports state that Davontay Grace '11 of Thomas Jefferson (NY) has committed to St. John's. A power guard at the 1 spot, Grace has been a big name in the Big Apple for years and will be staying there for his college ball.

-  My updated college top five keeps looks like this: #1 Kansas, #2 Texas, #3 Kentucky, #4 Purdue, #5 Duke. Note that the top three remains the same that it did in my preseason list.

- Apparently Matt Miller '10 has already made his college choice and Imissed it. An emailer sent me a link—thanks again!--to an article thatstated the Mount St. Joseph (MD) guard had committed to DII Seton Hill.

- Be sure to check out the weekly NBE Big East Power Poll  on Mondays at NBE Basketball Report,a ranking of the 16 teams in the Big East along with a player of theweek and freshman of the week. I am one of the 10 voters for the polland honorees.
