College Commitment Projections- December Edition, Part 1

by Alex Schwartz

In late September, I put out my college commitment projections on 47 class of 2010 prospects who were still on the board. I released them in five parts which can be seen here: One, Two, Three, Four, Five. Over half of those players—27 to be exact—have since made a college decision, and Northstar Basketball correctly projected the commitments of over a third of them and had the school listed either first or second for over half. While this is by no means and exact science, I do my best to accurately make the predictions.

Now it is time for my second wave of commitment projections for 2010 ballers who have yet to lock in on a school. For each player I will list his name, position, height, high school, national rank in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, a top three, and for some also another school or two to keep in mind. Check out part one:

Brandon Knight, PG, 6'3, Pine Crest (FL), #1
Favorite: UConn
2nd in Line:
Kentucky
3rd in Line: Miami
Watch Out for: Kansas, Florida

Knight, the top player in the nation, is down to six schools in UConn, Kentucky, Miami, Kansas, Florida, and Syracuse. In my original projections, I listed the order as Miami, Kentucky, UConn, with Florida as one to watch, but my feelings on the elite floor general's recruitment has since changed. It now looks like this is going to come down to a battle between UConn and Kentucky, with the Huskies holding a slight edge. Knight's high school coach is from the Constitution State and Jim Calhoun and Co. are searching for a point guard, and Knight and Cory Joseph are the only two elite ones who still list the Big East power. Kentucky is only involved with two point guards also in Knight and Josh Selby, but the Wildcats are also in the mix for many other players. Miami, the local school, should not be overlooked as the Hurricanes are making a strong push for Knight, as is fellow in-state school, Florida. Kansas is still very much in play too, while Syracuse seems to have fallen far behind.

Josh Selby, PG, 6'2, Lake Clifton (MD), #7
Favorite: Kansas
2nd in Line: Kentucky
3rd in Line: Indiana
Watch Out for: Arizona
Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Arizona, and Syracuse are the final five for this top-notch scoring combo guard. At the end of the day I see this being a two horse race between Kansas and Kentucky. Just like with Knight, the Orange seem to be all but out of the picture, though you never know, as Jim Boeheim is a talented recruiter. Arizona has entered the picture late, so the Pac-10 Wildcats are a bit behind, but may be a sleeper here, just as Indiana is. Selby really enjoyed his trip to Bloomington, but it likely will not be enough to overtake Kansas and Kentucky. It is extremely difficult to tell which powerhouse is in the lead for Selby, but at this point I would go with Kansas. The Baltimore star's mother is very much involved in his recruitment and will actually be tripping to Lawrence by herself soon, a good sign for the Jayhawks. Also, Kansas has a much better shot at Selby than Knight and thus seems to be putting in more time to him. The first time around I had UK at number one, but the tide may well have turned a bit.

Doron Lamb, SG, 6'4, Oak Hill Academy (VA), #14
Favorite: Oklahoma
2nd in Line:
Kansas
3rd in Line: Kentucky
Watch Out for: Arizona

The top three schools remain the same for Lamb, a New York City native, but with one small change. While Kentucky stays at number three, Oklahoma passes Kansas and takes over the top spot. That trio of schools are the ones that are the most heavily involved in Lamb's recruitment and it has been that way for quite some time. Kentucky is just a notch below the other two, but should not at all be counted out. Whille Oklahoma gets the nod over Kansas here, it is very tight between the Sooners and Jayhawks. Lamb seems to like both Big XII schools a great deal. Arizona is making a late push, as is West Virginia, and UConn is still involved some extent, but those three are well behind the others.

Justin Coleman, SG, 6'4, Huntington Prep (WV), #21
Favorite: prep school/junior college
2nd in Line: Marquette
3rd in Line: Xavier

Watch Out for: Arkansas, Florida
At this point, it does not look like Coleman, who is at his third high school this year and fourth in two years, is going to qualify for a Division I scholarship academically. While his transfer to Huntington Prep shows that he is working towards that goal, it still remains unlikely. Should the athletic wing qualify, Marquette may well be his choice. While the Golden Eagles just might be in the lead, Xavier, Arkansas, Florida, UConn, Virginia, Providence, and others should not be counted out. If it is not Buzz Williams and Co. for Coleman, Xavier looks to be in good shape. Arkansas is right at that same level with the Atlantic-10 power, with the Gators trailing just a bit behind. It is really tough to tell though, as some schools may be scared off by Coleman's academic issues.

CJ Leslie, PF, 6'8, Word of God Academy (NC), #24
Favorite: Kentucky
2nd in Line: North Carolina State
3rd in Line: Florida

Quite frankly, it is between North Carolina State and Kentucky for this athletic combo forward and I can see it going either way. Florida is on the outside looking in, and if someone outside of that duo is going to land Leslie it will be the Gators, but that is a longshot. As for the Wildcats and Wolfpack, they seem to be about even. Leslie was committed to NC State at one point, but re-opened his recruitment many months ago. Since then, UK has made a very strong push to land him and the staff has done a great job. I am giving the edge to the SEC school at this point, as Calipari is just too good of a recruiter to miss out on all of his top prospects.

Ray McCallum, PG, 6'1, Detroit Country Day School (MI), #28
Favorite: UCLA
2nd in Line: Oklahoma
3rd in Line: Detroit
Watch Out for: Arizona, Florida

My top five for this talented Michigander remains steady—clearly, as he is down to just these five schools—but the order does shift a bit. UCLA has been the favorite to land McCallum for quite some time, and the only thing that might stop him from going there would be the Bruins' struggles this season. Despite that, still look for him to end up at the Pac-10 school. Oklahoma may well be in the best position of the other four schools to lure McCallum away from Ben Howland and Co. The Sooners have been involved with the heady floor general for quite some time and it is also on the list of his good friend Trey Zeigler, as is UCLA. Detroit checks in at number three, as the longer McCallum waits the more it seems like he just might want to play for his father, Detroit Head Coach Ray McCallum, Sr., at the next level. While Arizona is still in the picture, the Wildcats could be fading a bit, hence the reason the schools is making a run at Josh Selby. Florida is the other program still in the mix, and should not be discounted, though it is the only school not in the Midwest or on the West Coast. When all is said and done, look for McCallum to be a UCLA Bruin.

Terrence Jones, PF, 6'8, Jefferson (OR), #29
Favorite: Washington
2nd in Line:
Oklahoma
3rd in Line: Oregon
Watch Out for: Kentucky, UCLA

These are the five schools that remain on Jones' list and it is very difficult to tell who is leading for this versatile combo forward. He took all of his visits before the early signing period, but was not ready to make a decision. Washington makes the most sense, as it does appear that Jones would prefer to stay on the West Coast, specifically the Pacific Northwest, and the coaching situation is much more stable at Washington than it is at Oregon. While Ernie Kent is on the hot seat, Lorenzo Romar is in good shape, and his team is the best in the Pac-10, another factor that could play a part. Oklahoma had been rumored to be the leader for Jones at one point—I had the Sooners at number one in the first go around—and it is not too far across the country and gets a light nod over Oregon for the second spot. Jeff Capel is an outstanding recruiter and just produced the top pick in the NBA Draft, which only enhances his abilities. While Kentucky is doing a fantastic job with Jones, the location just looks like it will be too much to overcome, as it is by far the farthest away from home. UCLA is the final school still on Jones' list and the Bruins remain a player for the long forward.
