Enes Kanter to Washington; Darrell Williams to Oklahoma State; David Laury to Iona
by Alex Schwartz
Washington doubled the size of its 2010 recruiting class on Monday, adding one of the top prospects in the class of 2010. According to Scout, 6'9 big man Enes Kanter of Stone Ridge Prep (CA) committed to Lorenzo Romar and Co. He joins 6'7 small forward Desmond Simmons, the #60 ranked player in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, in the Huskies' class.
Kanter received interest from dozens upon dozens of high-major programs after coming over from Turkey a few months ago. At first he was at Findlay Prep (NV) before transferring to Mountain State Academy (WV) and then leaving there for Stone Ridge Prep. The transfers were duo to amateurism concerns, as other schools were concerned that Kanter was a pro in the eyes of the NCAA and did not want to play against him. There is still some question as to whether or not he will end up playing college ball, and if he does how many games he will miss. Nonetheless, this is a huge pickup for Washington.
A signing that flew under the radar last week was that of Darrell Williams, a 6'8 junior college sophomore at Midland JC (TX). The big man inked with Oklahoma State according to a source close to the situation. From the looks of it, this is the first report of Williams' commitment and signing. He joins four other players who were signed by the Big XII program in 6'3 SG Markel Brown of Peabody (LA), 6'8 PF Michael Cobbins of Palo Duro (TX), 6'5 SG Brian Williams from Glen Oaks (LA), and 6'6 junior college SF JP Olukemi from Vincennes University (IN). Brown is ranked #68 in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, while Cobbins is #81. The Cowboys have a borderline top 20 class nationally.
Yesterday morning, according to a source close to the situation, 6'7 combo forward David Laury '10 of Ocean Academy (NJ) committed to Iona, in news that was broken by Northstar Basketball via our Twitter page. A big body who can both shoot from the perimeter and drive to the rack, Laury chose the Gaels over Houston and TCU. Laury had signed with Western Kentucky last year, but left the school soon after getting there because he was uncomfortable. Laury has a chance to be a major impact player for Iona, a MAAC school with a lot of players from the Garden State.
