National Preseason High School Top 100- Part Three: 31-50
by Alex Schwartz
It is time for Part Three of my ranking of the National Preseason High School Top 100. I have already released the squads ranked 76-100 (plus Just Missed and Honorable Mentions) as well as the teams that checked in between 51 and 75. Some traditional powerhouses such as #58 Detroit Country Day School (MI), #65 Simeon (IL), #66 Arlington Country Day School (FL), #84 Christ the King (NY), and #91 De La Salle (CA) are already off the board, showing how many quality teams there are out there. Once again, note that prep schools like Academy of the New Church (PA) and South Kent (CT) are ineligible to be ranked.
Now, have a look at the squads ranked 31-50 in the National Preseason High School Top 100:
31. Rice (NY): A three-headed attack of Kansas State-signee Shane Southwell '10, Kadeem Jack '10, and Jermaine Sanders '11 will lead the best team in New York. That trio gives Rice a star on the wing, in the post, and at the guard spot. Josh Gomez '11, Shamel Williams '11, Devaughn Reid '11, Dashawn Suber '12, and Scott Arias '10 are other members of this deep Big Apple power.
32. Sagemont School (FL): Despite having an extremely talented trio of players, this Sunshine State team is flying under the radar. Syracuse-bound Fab Melo '10 is one of the top three senior big men in America and he is one of just a few 7-footers in high school ball. Will Sheehey '10 and Rod Days '11 will lend Melo a lot of support from the wing.
33. Winter Park (FL): Austin Rivers '11 is one the best players in America regardless of class and led Winter Park to some major upsets last year as a mere sophomore. Now a junior, the Florida-bound combo guard and son of Boston Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers will team with Fairfield-commit Adam Jones '10, Florida Atlantic-pledge Brett Comer '11, and Robert Lovaglio '11 to form a terrific team down South.
34. Paterson Catholic (NJ): One of the many top-notch teams in New Jersey, Paterson Catholic is deep, talented, and experienced. Seton Hall-signee Fuquan Edwin '10 is the go-to guy, but he is not the only weapon the Cougars have. Derrick Randall '11, Myles Mack '11, Kyle Anderson '12, Jayon James '10, Jermaine Peart '10, and Pitt football-commit TJ Clemmings '10 are other key players, while standout freshmen Reggie Cameron and Kavon Stewart provide depth.
35. Lincoln (TX): LeBryan Nash '11, is an ultra-athletic wing and one of the top juniors in the country and Keaton Miles is another class of 2011 standout. The other key members of this Lone Star State squad are Courtney Hooper '12 and Steven Govan '10, the lone senior of the quartet.
36. Miller Grove (GA): The squad from Georgia is not getting as much publicity as it deserves. Tony Parker, a sophomore big man, is one of the elite sophomores in America. Donte Williams '10 provides not only senior leadership, but also another quality presence inside. Henry Brooks '11 is yet another big body in the paint, and those three are the prime players, so a guard will need to step up.
37. DeSoto (TX): Texas A&M-bound big man Keith Davis '10 is the team's star player, but he will not be without support. LSU football-commit Evan Washington '10, Derico Dandridge '10, and Jabril Durham '12 are three other ballers that will be key if DeSoto is to retain a high ranking nationally.
38. Bishop O'Connell (VA): North Carolina-signee Kendall Marshall '10 is one of the top point guards and players in the nation and flat-out gets wins. Marcus Carmon '10 and James Bourne '11 are quality players in the post, while Jordan Burgess '11 and Larry Savage '11 are talented wings, making it a well-rounded attack for the under the radar Old Dominion State squad.
39. St. Anthony's (NJ): The Friars will battle with #34 Paterson Catholic and #99 St. Peter's Prep for the number three spot in the New Jersey. Bob Hurley is arguably the best coach in the country and St. Anthony's is arguably the best program in the country. Oregon State-bound Devon Collier '10, Richmond-signee Derrick Williams '10, and Ashton Pankey '10 are a terrific trio of 6'7+ post players, while St. Bonaventure-commit Eli Carter '10 is a top-notch guard and Lucious Jones '11 and Jerome Frink '12 are talented too.
40. Pershing (MI): Led by Michigan State-signee Keith Appling '10, a prolific scorer who can play either guard spot, Pershing will be challenged by #58 Detroit Country Day School for the top spot in Michigan. Juwan Howard, Jr. '10, who is headed to Western Michigan, is the other part of the team's big-time duo.
41. Neumann-Goretti (PA): The Saints are the best team in Pennsylvania, but will have to hold off #67 to retain that title this year. Featuring a deep and talented backcourt of Wake Forest-signee Tony Chennault '10, La Salle-bound Tyreek Duren '10, Hartford-pledge Mustafa Jones '10, and Lamin Fulton '11, the team from the City of Brotherly Love can really fill it up. Rider-signee Danny Stewart '10, a combo forward, and his brother Derrick Stewart '12 along with John Davis '13 are the other key players.
42. Liberty County (GA): Much like fellow Peach State squad #36 Miller Grove, the team from Liberty County is not receiving as much love nationally as it deserves. Led by a pair of talented senior wings in Tennessee-bound Jordan McRae and Miami-signee Rion Brown '10, this group has a shot to surprise some people.
43. Lake Clifton (MD): Some are not giving the Baltimore team as much respect as it deserves due to the loss of some ultra-talented players, but Josh Selby '10, a combo guard, is a gifted scorer with fantastic athleticism who is one of the best players in America. Durand Johnson '11 is another athletic scorer who will take some of the burden off of Selby.
44. Enloe (NC): Wake Forest-signee Melvin Tabb '10 is the main man for the team from the Tar Heel State. The talented forward will receive help from two fellow seniors in Emanuel Chapman and Tevin Jones, both of whom are skilled in their own right. This trio will have to carry Enloe throughout the season.
45. Jesuit (OR): Right now Jesuit is the top team in the state of Oregon, but they will have to hold off #62 Jefferson. This team is led by a talented pair of players in big man Kyle Wiltjer '11, one of the best juniors in the country, and St. Mary's-bound Stephen Holt '10, who is a top-notch floor general.
46. Half Hollow Hills West (NY): The team from Long Island is being vastly underrated on a national level. Tobias Harris '10, a big com forward, is an ultra-skilled player and one of the top seniors in America. Tavon Sledge '11 is a point guard who can really play too, while Tyler Harris '12, Tobias' brother, is the main man on the wing. This trio—none of whom played at Hills West last year—will give #31 Rice a run for its money for the Empire State's top spot.
47. Benedictine School (VA): Incoming transfer Michael Gbinije '11 can really fill it up, and the wing is one of premier juniors nationally. He will receive help from another pair of class of 2011 players in Erik Moody and Ricky Price, but the Virginian squad does lack a quality threat in the post.
48. Murrah (MS): LaQuinton Ross, a junior wing, is considered one of the top class of 2011 players in the country, while Ole Miss-signee Dundrecous Nelson '10 is an athletic guard. That duo will have to carry much of the load for the top team in Mississippi—#94 Callaway may have something to say about that—though Treshaun Bolden '13 will lend some support from the paint.
49. St. Frances (MD): Despite losing its superstar, the team from the Old Line State still has plenty of talent still on the roster. Future Richmond Spider Wayne Sparrow '10, a combo guard, is part of an extremely good trio of players that also includes guard Dante Holmes '10 and center Greg Lewis '11. The group also includes a player with a basketball bloodline in Sam Cassell, Jr. '11.
50. North Central (IN): Rounding out the top 50 is one if Indiana's top teams, North Central, which features a big-time guard duo. D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera '12 is one of the nation's elite sophomores and he will be bale to learn from Purdue-bound Terone Johnson '10, who is also very good, throughout the season. The squad will need a post presence to reach full potential though.
