News & Notes

- The #23 ranked player in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125 will be taking his name off the board. Jefferson (OH) star Adreian Payne, a 6'10 center, is expected to choose between West Virginia and Michigan State, according to reports. Kentucky and Arizona are also still in the mix, while Kansas was recently eliminated from contention. I had projected that Payne would commit to WVU, with UK listed as 2nd in Line and MSU in 3rd. This evening we will all find out what Payne's intentions are.
- According to Northfield Mt. Hermon (MA) Head Coach John Carroll, Majok Majok '10 is going to be a spring signee. The cousin of UConn's Ater Majok has interest/offers from schools ranging from the high-major level to the Ivy League.
- Rutgers got a commitment from Austin Carroll '10 of Brewster Academy (NH) on Tuesday. The wing is the son of former Boston Celtics Head Coach John Carroll—not the same one mentioned above—and he picked the Scarlet Knights over Harvard according to reports.
- Hakeem Harris '10, ranked #39 by Northstar Basketball in New Jersey's Fab 45 Upperclassmen, has committed to Columbia, per Scout. Harris, a 6'1 combo guard from Blair Academy (NJ), is a great get for the Ivy League program. I confirmed this commitment with a source close to the situation.
- After being swept 3-0 in the 2008 Eddie Griffin Challenge by the Philadelphia side, the New Jersey players bounced back to win 2-1 last weekend. The Garden State juniors and seniors defeated their Philly counterparts, with the sophomores as the only team to fall.
- Now that Kyrie Irving '10 of St. Patrick's (NJ) has committed to Duke, Julian Washburn and Devon Collier become the top New Jersey seniors still on the board. Washburn, the son of former North Carolina State standout and NBA player Chris Washburn, is a 6'7 small forward who is at St. Patrick's after transferring from Duncanville (TX). Devon Collier, a 6'7 power forward, is a New York native who attends St. Anthony's (NJ). Washburn is rated #101 in the nation by Northstar Basketball and is #7 in New Jersey's Fab 45 Upperclassmen, while Collier falls in at #118 and #9 respectively.
- As of now it appears that St. Joseph's-bound Daryus Quarles '10, a 6'7 small forward, will not be playing high school ball this year. Ranked #120 in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125 and #10 in our New Jersey's Fab 45 Upperclassmen list, Quarles was ruled ineligible to play at Paulsboro (NJ) this year by the NJSIAA after transferring back there from Life Center Academy (NJ) late in his junior year. This is according to NJHoops, which also reported that Quarles' appeal was denied.
