Shabazz Napier Player Diary Entry #1

Shabazz Napier '11 of Lawrence Academy (MA) burst onto the scene this summer through his impressive performances at the U17 level with Metro Boston. The point guard has been garnering college interest from programs such as Memphis, Arizona, Miami, and Arizona State. Here, in his first player diary entry, the rising star discusses how he has come into the national spotlight over the past few months as well as what he is up to now. Check it out:

So this here is diary entry #1 out of who knows how many. Well a little about me; I am Shabazz Napier, currently a junior at Lawrence Academy, which is a great school by the way. So what I should I begin with? Umm… Guess I will begin with how I played in the summer of 2009. This will be brief.

So coming into the summer I was not ranked as a top player in the country so I had a lot to work for. I was just an average kid to most college scouts. So understanding this I knew what I had to do. I went to the Reebok All-American Camp and played very well. Well enough to get a few more colleges to start looking at me more often than before. Before going to this camp I knew it was going to be difficult not talent-wise, but in a sense of knowing everyone would try to over shine each other. So I put away my mini-ego because most knew me for scoring a bunch, and worked on a different role. Being a pass first point guard and controlling a team without scoring helped my situation out a lot. Not only did I learn a lot doing this, college scouts could now witness that I can play both roles, which can be difficult for lots of players.

Enough of that camp. What put me at where I am at now, which is ranked top 60 in 2011 class were the 17u Showcase and 17u Nationals. My team, which includes: Ike Azotam, (just committed to Quinnipiac University) Mario Monroe, Allen Harris, Marcus Grant, Sarkie Ampim, Troy Robinson, and the underclassman which you will soon know who they are when they start playing well enough, all played very well and helped to make it to the Sweet 16. We lost, but personally we had no energy left from playing in an early game. That’s basically what put me where I am at in the basketball recruiting world.

So for what I am doing at school, um I just had a football game yesterday and our team prevailed in a 48-6 win. I play as a WR and this is my second year playing. Fingers are getting tired so I will write back when they get enough rest. Don’t know when that will be so just read this a couple more times. LOL NOSA..
