C. Gunter to UPenn; S. Eatherton to St. Francis (PA); B. Voelkel to Vermont
by Alex Schwartz
A trio of area class of 2010 players have come off the board in the past two days, all to low-major programs in the Northeast. Cameron Gunter of Ridley (PA) selected UPenn, Scott Eatherton from Hershey (PA) popped for St. Francis (PA), and Brian Voelkel of Iona Prep (NY) selected Vermont. All three of these players are very good gets for the programs they chose.
Cameron Gunter has the potential to be a fantastic Ivy League player for UPenn. A 6'8 power forward, Gunter was a Senior All-Star at Hoop Group Elite Camp Session One this summer. The big man can put the ball on the floor a bit and has some range on his J. Gunter is an intelligent kid, and that translates onto the court, where he has a high basketball IQ. Gunter will not wow you, but he does all the little things that a team needs. I first learned of Gunter's commitment on NJHoops.
Scott Eatherton missed almost all of the July Live Evaluation period with a broken bone in his right hand, but he can definitely play. St. Francis (PA) is getting a hard working 6'7 big man who can run the floor and rebound the basketball. A big body in the post, Eatherton will not be a star, but will be a solid role player for the NEC school. It was on Hoop Scoop that I first saw that Eatherton had made his decision.
Brian Volekel committed to Vermont today, according to a source close to the situation. The 6'6 small forward really boosted his stock during the high school season and also the summer. He helped Iona Prep have a superb season and was a key part of the Westchester Hawks' success in July. Voelkel is a smart player who works hard and passes the rock well. He has a chance to be a very good player for the Catamounts.
