News & Notes

- According to Scout, Rakeem Brookins '10 of Roman Catholic (PA), who I consider to be one of the top 200 players in the senior class, has committed to Tulane. The Green Wave seem to have come into the picture a bit later on, as when I spoke to Brookins at the Rasual Butler All-City Basketball Classic in early June, he C-USA program was not amongst the 17 schools he listed. "Rahk" as he is known, had a lot of interest from schools in the CAA, A-10, and Ivy League, but decided to go another route.

- Also according to Scout, Jeremy Lamb '10 of Norcross (GA), ranked #45 in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, has committed to UConn. The 6'4 wing, who was maybe the biggest stock booster of the summer—he did not even start on his high school team as a junior—selected the Huskies over schools such as Texas, Kentucky, and USC.

- Another player ranked in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, #113 Ralston Turner from Muscle Shoals (AL), came off the board on Tuesday, per Scout—great work by Dave Telep and Evan Daniels. The athletic 6'5 small forward has committed to LSU, joining #56 ranked Matt Derenbecker, a 6'6 wing from Metairie Country Day (LA).

- Other commitments from top-notch seniors this week, per Scout and Rivals, #62 Phil Pressey chose Missouri, #67 James Johnson selected Virginia, and Bruce Ellington popped for South Carolina.

- There are only 44 uncommitted players left in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, but there are some big-time talents still out there. Over half of the players in the top 25, 13 of them, are still on the board. Of the top 50, 24 are still available.

- At The Hoop Group Elite Team Camp this summer, a class of 2011 point guard, Derrick Millinghaus of Schenectady (NY) showed everyone in the gym that he was for real, as he went for 26 points and about a dozen assists in a 14-point day one upset win over St. Patrick's (NJ). At that point the 5'10 floor leader was getting minimal college interest, but since then his list has expanded. Fordham (offer), Fairfield, Iona, Vermont, LSU, Syracuse, Penn State, Northeastern, and UMES are the programs that he lists now, with SU and PSU as his favorites. Although Derrick has yet to take any visits, he will be checking out Fordham on October 3rd and then Fairfield on October 10th. Millinghaus will be "going [to a] prep [school] next year," as he will be ineligible to play at Schenectady as a senior. "I don't know what prep school I'm going to yet, [but I'm going] because I won't be eligible to play next year because my birthday comes before September."

- Rico Winston '09 will be spending one year at Cecil College, a JuCo in Maryland, in order to get more exposure. Winston was a player that I really liked at one of the 2008 Hoop Group Elite Camps.

- Nice article by Ray Anczelowicz of Gotham Hoops Scouting on the New Heights Coaching Clinic, along with a video interview with Providence Head Coach Keno Davis. Anczelowicz also got a video interview with St. John's Head Coach Norm Roberts.

- Joey Gallo, who was listed as a local basketball person who will soon land as a DI assistant, has come on board full time with The Hoop Group and will be working with another member of the list, Mike Farrelly, as a the Director of Hoop Group Elite Camp. Gallo left his position as an assistant coach at his alma mater Merrimack College, a DII school in Massachusetts, to join Rob Kennedy's organization.
