NBAPA Top 100 Camp- Day Three Top Performers and Recruiting Updates
Although I was only able to stay for the morning session of the final day of the NBAPA Top 100 Camp, I was still able to catch up with a number of talented players and also watch some good hoops action. The playoffs were quite intense, and featured a major upset, as the #8 Jazz beat the #1 Pistons, who came in undefeated and having beaten the Jazz the previous night. The #6 Hawks also avenged a loss from the previous night against the #3 Celtics. The games were intense, and the players and coaches were both really into it. Here's a bit of a rundown from Day Three of the camp:
Trey Zeigler ’10, Mount Pleasant (MI): Michigan,
Michigan State, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Pitt, Miami, LSU, Minnesota, and
Providence
Favorites: “Not yet. I want to take some visits this summer and then try to narrow it down from there by the end of the summer.”
Note- Regarding whether location will be a factor, Zeigler said, “No, I don’t think so. I moved around a lot when I was younger, so I can pretty much live anywhere.”
Tarik Black ’10, Ridgeway (TN): ACC, SEC, Pac-10,
C-USA, A-10, and Big East schools
Offers: n/a
Favorites: None
Notes-Black did not feel comfortable
listing the schools recruiting him, but those were the six conferences he said
he was garnering interest from. When asked which coaches he had the best
relationship with, Tarik stated, “[I have] some good relationships with a lot
of coaches, [but] none who stand out.”
Justin Martin ’10, Lawrence North (IN): Arizona,
Memphis, Kentucky, Miami, Florida, DePaul, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Xavier
Offers: Arizona, Miami, and Xavier
Favorites: “No, I’m just open.”
Notes- Martin, a one-time
Louisville-commit, said “they haven’t contacted me since I de-committed, [but]
. . . I don’t know why.” On his reasoning for re-opening his recruitment,
Martin stated, “It was a family decision. . . . We thought that I committed too
early and my name had just gotten too hot.”
Stacey Poole ’10, Jackson (FL): Indiana, Oklahoma,
Xavier, Clemson, Florida, and South Carolina
Offers: Indiana, Xavier, Clemson, Florida,
and South Carolina
Favorites: “No, no, I’m just playing it out.
All of them are nice, but I’m just waiting it out until after the AAU season.”
Notes-
The player’s father, also named Stacey Poole, went to Florida to play
basketball, and I asked him if that would impact his decision, and he told me, “No,
not at all. If that’s where it’s meant for me to go, I’ll go, but I got to build
my own legacy.” Asked how his father has impacted his hoops career, Poole
remarked, “A lot, he made me who I am today. . . . Just having him in the home
is a blessing, . . . having a male in the house is a blessing. [He] . . .
teaches me a lot.”
Mychal Parker ’10, Miller School (VA): Miami,
Maryland, Florida, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Ohio State, Kentucky,
UCLA, USC, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Duke, and North
Carolina
Offers: Miami, Maryland, Florida,
Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Clemson
Favorites: None
Note- Due to the fact that Parker listed
so many ACC schools, I asked him if he thought he would end up in that conference,
and he replied, “Who knows. That’s the best conference.”
Damontre Harris ’10, Trinity Christian School (NC):
UConn, Maryland, South Carolina, Virginia Commonwealth, Boston College,
Virginia Tech, and Providence
Offers: UConn, Maryland, South
Carolina, Virginia Commonwealth, Boston College, and Virginia Tech
Favorites: “Not really. South Carolina
[has] been recruiting me the hardest and they have been there from the start,
so I like South Carolina. I like UConn’s system and I like VCU’s coaches.”
Note- Harris, who stated that those are
the seven schools are “the ones I’m really interested in,” told me the following
regarding whether location would be a factor: “A little bit. I don’t want to be
too far so my mom can’t see me play. I want her at most of my games, but no [it’s]
not really [a factor].”
Jonathan Graham ’10, Calvert Hall College HS (MD):
Villanova, Maryland, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Florida State, West Virginia,
and Providence
Offers: Providence
Favorites: None
Note- On what being at the NBAPA
Top 100 Camp has been like, Graham said, “It’s been a one of a kind experience
playing with all these great high school players from around the country. It
gives me an idea of what I need to work on.”
Mardracus Wade ’10, Mitchell Road (TN): Missouri,
Baylor, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Alabama, Miami, and UMass
Offers: Missouri, Baylor, Arkansas,
Ole Miss, Alabama, and UMass
Favorites: None
CJ Barksdale ’11, George Washington (VA): Virginia
Commonwealth, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Florida, Alabama, USC,
West Virginia, Penn State, Wake Forest, and Maryland
Offers: Virginia Tech, Virginia, Florida,
Alabama, Wake Forest, and Maryland
Favorite: “North Carolina [has] been my
favorite college since I was little.”
Notes- I asked Barksdale if he thought he
would wind up in the ACC, and he answered, “I hope. That’s my dream, to play in
the ACC.” Regarding whether or not location will be a factor, CJ stated, “Yeah,
I want to stay close to home so my family can see me play.” He added that it
did not have to be an in-state school, “just someplace local."
