NBAPA Top 100 Camp- Day Two Top Performers and Recruiting Updates
The second day of the NBAPA Top 100 Camp was even better than the first! There were a number of big-time matchups, some spectacular plays, and a few surprises. An unscheduled dunk contest and All-Star Game were both held today, and that was a good way to fill some time in the afternoon. Again, information on games and other updates are being posted on the Northstar Basketball Twitter page, and it is in this article where you will see school lists, standout performers, and some other info. Here is the lowdown:
School Lists/Recruiting Updates
Roscoe Smith ’10, Walbrook (MD): UConn, Florida, LSU,
Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Wake Forest, USC, UCLA, Kentucky, Duke, Texas
A&M, Kansas, Baylor, Miami, Florida State, and Georgetown
Offers: All
Favorites: None; “All of them [are]
equal.”
Notes- Smith, who plans to attend Oak Hill
Academy (VA) next year, said of North Carolina, “I haven’t been talking to them
[recently].” That is why he did not include UNC on his list. Also, Roscoe
informed me that there are other colleges on the list that he could not
remember, stating, “If I left any schools out, my apologies.”
Cameron Clark ’10, Sherman (TX): Texas, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, USC, and UCLA
Offers: All
Favorites: None
Note- Clark informed me that location will not be a factor in his
decision.
Casey Prather ’10, Jackson Northside (TN): Michigan,
Clemson, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Florida, Memphis,
and Minnesota
Offers: Michigan, Clemson, Vanderbilt,
Georgia, Georgia Tech, Memphis, and Minnesota
Favorites: "Not at this point."
Note- Regarding whether or not
location will be a factor, Prather said, "No sir, it's wherever I'd
feel happy at."
Jelan Kendrick ’10, Westlake (GA): ACC, Big East,
SEC, Pac-10, and C-USA schools
Offers: “I have 32 offers.”
Favorites: “No, not at all.”
Notes- Kendrick, who stated that
home-state schools Georgia and Georgia Tech were the first to start recruiting
him, told me that location would “not at all” be a factor in his decision,
which he said will come “either after all the camps or by [the start of] my
high school season.” When I inquired which schools were recruiting him the
hardest, he answered, “Pretty much everybody is coming pretty hard [and] . . .
I’m just trying to get a feel for the coaches and the players, and make sure
that’s the definite place for me before I make a decision.”
James Johnson ’10, Morse (CA): Arizona, Arizona
State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, San Diego State, San Diego,
Texas, and Virginia
Offers: Arizona, San Diego State, San
Diego, and Virginia
Favorites: “I like this school
[Virginia] a lot. I’m not sure if it’s where I would choose. It’s kind of early
for me in the recruiting process. I don’t have any real favorites, [but] I like
this school a lot. It seems like a good place.”
Note- Johnson said that location would
not really be a factor in his decision. “Not so much. My sister lives [out]
here. She goes to Liberty. I talked to the [Virginia Head] Coach [Tony Bennett,
and] he’s a good Christian man. . . . It would help, but I don’t care [about
location that much].”
Kyle Collinsworth ’10, Provo (UT): Kansas, Virginia,
Stanford, Arizona State, and BYU (he said this is his “top five right now.”
Offers: Virginia, Stanford, Arizona
State, and BYU
Favorites: None
Notes- Collinsworth plans to make
his decision in the “early fall . . . hopefully.” When I asked him if his
decision would definitely be come from one of those five schools he replied,
“You never know, but as of now, [yes, it will] probably [come from] that top
five unless something crazy happens, [like] a new school comes in that I like.”
Dwight Powell ’10, IMG Academy (FL): Stanford,
Harvard, Cal, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Oregon State
Offers: “I don’t know about offers.”
Favorites: None; “I’m still pretty open.”
Note- Powell, who told me that there are
other schools recruiting him that he could not think of, said he had a 4.0 GPA
this past school year.
Alex Rossi ’10, New Trier (IL): Cal, Notre Dame,
Stanford, and Virginia (“I’m down to [these] schools.”)
Offers: Cal, Notre Dame, and
Stanford
Favorite: “Yeah, I really liked Cal
a lot.”
Notes- Rossi, who has a 3.9 GPA and
scored a 22 on the ACT, was at the Virginia Elite Camp over the weekend, and
stayed for the NBAPA Top 100 Camp. Regarding what he is looking for in a
college, Rossi stated, “The first thing is academics. I want to use basketball
to get into a better academic school. [Also], the coaches [and] the
relationships [that I have with them]. I think all the schools I have left
really fit my needs. [I just have to decide] where I’m most comfortable.”
Shannon Scott ’11, Milton (GA): Clemson, Florida
State, Xavier, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Georgia, and
Northwestern
Offers: Clemson, Florida State, Xavier,
Georgia Tech, and Northwestern
Favorites: “No, not really. I haven’t
really narrowed it down.”
Note- Shannon, whose father Charlie Scott
played in the NBA, said the following on how his dad impacts him
basketball-wise: “He helps a lot. Most kids don’t have a chance to have
coaching all the time. He always helps out and he always gives me advice.”
Jabari Parker ’13, Simeon (IL): Illinois, DePaul,
Oregon State, Oregon, and Kentucky
Offers: All
Favorites: “I like Illinois and DePaul
because I like [that they are] close to home.”
Notes- Parker, who said he does “not really”
have a dream school, told me, “I want to stay close to home [for college],”
though he said it did not have to be an in-state school. Parker stated that he
chose to attend Simeon, the alma mater of Derrick Rose, because he and “[Head]
Coach Robert Smith have a good relationship,” also mentioning that he “has been
working out there a lot.” Some people would say Parker is the top player in his
class, and I asked him what that feels like. “Well, it brings me down to earth,
and I can’t take it for granted because somebody is out there trying to take my
spot at number one.” Regarding goals for his high school career, Jabari
remarked, “[I want to] stay above a 3.5 GPA, [as] I want to go out strong [and]
get a degree in college. . . . [Basketball wise, I want to] work hard [and] try
to get better off the older guys, so [that] when I’m a senior I can be
prepared. Regarding getting so much national attention while still so young,
Parker told me, “Sometimes it gets on my nerves. A lot of that stuff doesn’t
mean anything. . . . I play basketball because I love it [and] . . . since I do
that, it rewarded me, and look at me now.”
I also talked to seven committed players, and those write-ups will be in another post to come later.
