News & Notes

- New Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari is back in the news, but for a completely different reason. According to ESPN, Rivals, and ZagsBlog—citing an article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal—the former Memphis Head Coach was involved in some major violations. Although his name is not specifically mentioned in the NCAA's report, it alleges that there was fraudulence involved with a recruit's SAT (ZagsBlog says it is believed to be Derrick Rose, the first pick in the 2008 NBA Draft), and also money that was given to a player's handler. Should this turn out to be true, both Kentucky and Memphis could face some penalties, with Memphis facing the possibility of vacating its 2008 Final Four appearance. Only time will tell what happens.
- East Coast Basketball Report was the first to report that Tevin Baskin '09 of Trinity Catholic (CT) has committed to Quinnipiac. A an athletic forward, Bas kin is a major pickup for Tom Moore and Co. The school has a big-time recruiting class that also includes Jamee Jackson '09 of St. Anthony's (NJ), amongst others.
- I first saw in an article on ZagsBlog that Manhattan has a signed Kevin Laue '09 of Fork Union Military Academy (VA), a 6'10 big man with one hand. This is a great accomplishment for Kevin, and Northstar Basketball would like to congratulate him on beating the odds and landing a Division I scholarship!
- According to numerous reports, Latavious Williams '09 of Christian Life Center (TX) has committed to Memphis. The power forward is a major get for new Tigers Head Coach Josh Pastner, as he has now landed that blue chip recruit that helps give the program credibility in the post John Calipari era.
