Memphis to Pursue Noel Johnson; Team Final and Playaz Take Crowns in Bob Gibbons TOC
by Alex Schwartz
On Saturday night, Northstar Basketball broke the news that Noel Johnson '09 is asking for his release from USC. Well, Sunday I learned, from a reliable source close to the Memphis program, that the Tigers plan to make a strong push to land the talented wing from Fayette County (GA). According to the source who told me that Johnson was asking for the release, the player will consider Georgia Tech, LSU, UConn, and UNLV, so we'll see if Josh Pastner and Co. can get involved. The C-USA power continues to recruit Latavious Williams '09 and Lance Stephenson '09.
On another note, arguably the premier AAU tournament of the year went down this weekend in North Carolina, the Bob Gibbons TOC. Featuring a vast number of the
best AAU teams in the country, the event is always a great one. This year a couple of local team took home titles. Team Final (PA) knocked off the CP3 All-Stars (NC) in the championship of the U-17 bracket. Team Final is led by Michael Gilchrist '11 of St. Patrick's (NJ), Syracuse-pledge Dion Waiters '10 of Life Center Academy (NJ), Trevor Cooney '11 of Sanford School (DE), Villanova-commit Markus Kennedy '10 of Living Faith (NJ), and Tyreek Duran '10 of Neumann-Goretti (PA). CP3 boasts North Carolina-commit Reggie Bullock '10 of Kinston (NC), PJ Hairston '11 of Dudley (NC), and Wake Forest-pledge Melvin Tabb '10 of Enloe (NC). In the U-16 age group, the Playaz (NJ) continued their dominance, knocking off the Long Island Lightning- Dingle (NY) in the finals. The Playaz are led by Myles Mack '11 of Paterson Catholic (NJ), Myles Davis '11 of St. Peter's Prep (NJ), Derrick Randall '11 of Paterson Catholic (NJ), Desmond Hubert '11 of New Egypt (NJ), and Kyle Anderson '12 of Paterson Catholic (NJ), amongst others. The Long Island Lightning squad featured Davontay Grace '11 of Thomas Jefferson (NY), Kareem Canty '11 of Bishop Loughlin (NY), and Derrick Gordon '11 of St. Patrick's (NJ), who ususally runs with Team Jersey Elite.
