Steve Samuels on Picking St. Peter's; Gary Correia to Stay at UMass

by Alex Schwartz

Northstar Basketball recently wrote that Steve Samuels '09 of Windsor (CT) was close to making a commitment, and that was indeed the case. "I signed with St. Peter's," stated the talented point guard when I caught up with him via text message earlier in the week. How did the Connecticut native decide to come to the Garden State school? "I had a great time on the visit, and one of the assistant coaches was my AAU coach [with Connecticut Basketball Club], . . . Marlon Guild." This past season was Guild's first on the Peacocks' staff. Besides St. Peter's, Samuels said he also considered heading to "Virginia Commonwealth, Wright State, and Penn State."

In other news, Northstar Basketball was the first to report that Gary Correia was transferring from UMass to Boston University. Well, that has since changed. After reading on Jeff Goodman's College Hoop Blog: Good 'N Plenty that Correia was going to remain at the A-10 school, I checked back with the same source who told me he was leaving for BU to see what the story was, and he informed me, "Correia is staying at UMass." It seems that in the past month, Correia must have changed his mind, and thus will be with the Minutemen again next season.
