Under the Radar Decisions
by Alex Schwartz
Division II, Division III, and Division I walk-on commitments are not always highly publicized. Northstar Basketball likes to showcase these players, as well as those big-time ballers who are receiving DI scholarships. Over the past few weeks, I learned of a seven players who have decided to go these routes, and was able to catch up with three of them. Check it out:
Lorenzo Christmas '09, Norristown (PA), Hampton
Christmas, despite playing high school ball with Temple-signee Khalif Wyatt '09, has flown under the radar. In addition to being listed as a quality performer at the 2009 Prime Time Shootout by Northstar Basketball, Lorenzo was also great at The Hoop Group Elite Camp Session IV. He was listed as a top performer both on Day One and Day Four of the camp, and was also highly ranked by yours truly at that camp. In fact, Christmas was the second highest ranked player of all non-All-Stars that week. "I'm going to Hampton [and] . . . I'm playing ball," stated Christmas. He added, "I'm [going to] be a walk-on first, and then I'll try to earn the scholarship." Lorenzo informed me that he was a recruited walk-on by the Pirates, who are also bringing in Koron Reed '09 of Roman Catholic (PA), another Keystone State baller.
Reggie Coleman '09, Trenton Catholic (NJ), Neumann
A 5'7 combo guard, Coleman is a lights-out shooter, but when you're that small, it's hard to earn a scholarship, so after being a key piece off the bench for one of the top teams in New Jersey, Coleman will be going the DIII route. "I'm going to Neumann University," said Coleman via text message. When asked what his other finalists were, Reggie responded, "just Rutgers-Camden." He had gotten interest from others schools such as Delaware Valley, Gwynedd-Mercy, and Lesley as well. So why did Coleman choose Neumann? "I had a great visit. [The] campus wasn't too big or too small, [it's] just right. I know two people who are on the staff there. It's a Catholic college, and the coaching staff is really cool. [Also], the players I met seemed like they were good people, and they are building a new and bigger gym, which should be opening next month."
Harley Williamson '09, Lower Merion (PA), West Chester
A very good performer at the 09 Prime Time Shootout, Harley Williamson is headed to a local DII school next year. After telling me a few weeks ago via text message, "I think I'm going to West Chester," Williamson confirmed that to me recently. "West Chester had my best interests in mind and believed in me," stated Harley. His other final options were "Richmond or prep school."
Joe Rogers '09, Princeton Day School (NJ), Grinnell
Zaahid Holloman '09, Prep Charter (PA), University of Sciences in Philly
Avatar Jones '09, Strath Haven (PA), University of Sciences in Philly
Will Kernan '09, Lawrenceville School (NJ), University of Sciences in Philly
