What's Left in the Class of 2009? Second Edition
by Alex Schwartz
We're almost at the late signing period for college basketball. With just 17 days until that period begins, it's time to take a look at what remains amongst the class of 2009. Just about all the top-notch players have chosen their destinations, and many of them have locked in by signing their National Letter of Intent, but there are certainly a number of talented players still on the market. Here's the breakdown of some of the best uncommitted players in the nation, with a little blurb on the schools involved for some of the ballers:
John Wall, PG, Word of God (NC)- Memphis, Baylor, North Carolina State, Duke, and Miami appear to be the main schools involved with the nation's consensus number one point guard. Wall has publicly admitted that Memphis is his leader, but don't count out Baylor, which has John's former AAU coach, Dwon Clifton, on its staff. Miami is probably the longshot here, with NC State and Duke working the in-state factor in their attempt to land Wall.
Lance Stephenson, SG, Lincoln (NY)- The talented wing from the Big Apple has wrapped up his career with a record-setting fourth PSAL city title, and has set March 31st as the date for his college announcement, with Maryland, Kansas, and St. John's the schools vying for his services. UMD seems to be the most unlikely of choices, with Kansas as the probable destination according to an article on ZagsBlog. The Red Storm should be pushed to the side just yet though.
Latavious Williams, PF, Christian Life Center (TX)- Georgetown has come on strong to get involved with the best uncommitted big man in America, and they join Memphis, Florida State, Baylor, and Kansas State amongst the schools pursuing Williams. It doesn't look like it will be Memphis, which recently got a commitment from DeMarcus Cousins '09 of LeFlore (AL), arguably the best big man in the nation. FSU and KSU have been involved with Williams for a while, but Georgetown looks like the likely choice with Baylor right behind.
Kyryl Natyazhko, C, IMG Academy (FL)- Miami, Ohio, and Xavier are amongst the schools trying to land the international big man. It has seemed of late that Natyazhko will choose to go to a mid-major school rather than a BCS conference school, though that is by no means a done deal.
Eric Bledsoe, PG, Parker (AL)- Kentucky, UAB, Duke, and Memphis are some of the schools trying to land Bledsoe. With the coaching change at UK, it's unclear right now how—or even if—it will affect Eric. UAB is a definite possibility, with Duke having a shot as well. The only way there's even a chance for Bledsoe to end up at Memphis is if Wall commits elsewhere.
Sherrod Wright, SG, Mt. Vernon (NY)- The New Yorker's recruitment has been an interesting one, as there is an interesting blend of schools involved. Central Florida, South Florida, South Carolina, and George Mason are a few of the schools looking to land the Mt. Vernon product.
Glenn Bryant, PF, Oak Hill Academy (VA)- UAB looks to be a very strong in the recruitment of the OHA star, though schools such as South Florida, Marquette, Nebraska, and Michigan are involved as well.
Darius Smith, PG, Marshall (IL)
Nik Garcia, SG, Evanston (IL)
Terrell Vinson, SF, St. Frances (MD)
Roscoe Davis, PF, Laurinburg Prep (NC)
Victor Rudd, PF, Findlay College Prep (NV)
- John Wall, Lance Stephenson, Latavious Williams, and Kyryl Natyazhko are the only players ranked in the top 10 at their positions by Rivals, with these being the only 12 players left in the site's top 150.
- Roscoe Davis (West Virginia), Eric Bledsoe (Ole Miss), and Terrell Vinson (Loyola Marymount) have all decommitted from their original picks.
- Latavious Williams and Roscoe Davis are both post grads, while John Wall is a fifth year senior.
- Other kids may become available due to coaching changes. Some of those players are Kentucky signees Jon Hood, Daniel Orton, and GJ Vilarino, as well as Virginia signees Jontel Evans and Tristan Spurlock.
