News & Notes

- Northstar Basketball correctly picked the winner of 21 of the 28 boys' games at the 2009 Prime Time Shootout, for a 75% success rate. This included going 6/6 on the games played January 31st at Villanova and 7/7 on the games played February 15th at the Sovereign Bank Arena.

- Northstar Basketball correctly predicted 21 of the 24 McDonald's All-American Game selections, good for 87.5%. The three players that were wrong were listed as the "Final Three In" and the three who made it instead were all listed as either "Final Three Out" or "Others Considered".

- There were 14 players selected to both the 2009 Jordan Brand Classic All-American Game and the McDonald's All-American Game. Of the six players in the Jordan Game not in the McD's Game, three (John Wall, Jordan Hamilton, and Daniel Orton) were actually ineligible for the latter.

- Speaking of all-star games, FAAZ Magazine is putting on its11th annual Senior Showcase, which puts a group of Floridians against the rest of the nation. The organizers of the game are making an effort to get Lance Stephenson '09 of Lincoln (NY) to play and seem to be making some headway. In addition, a reliable source has told me that Dexter Strickland '09 of St. Patrick's (NJ) has given his commitment to play in the game and will be in Orlando, Florida for the game, which is on April 18th.

- Two members of the Team New Jersey ABC AAU basketball program picked up their first scholarship offers this evening. Khalid Lewis El '11 of Trenton Catholic Academy (NJ) was offered by Robert Morris, while Harold Spears '10 of The Pennington School (NJ) was offered by Lafayette.

- Speaking of Trenton Catholic, the Iron Mikes throttled West Windsor-Plainsboro South (NJ) tonight in a matchup of the top two teams in Mercer County. A 17-point halftime, 41-24, lead turned into a 89-51 victory for TCA, which was playing at home. WWPS, the number one seed in both the Mercer County Tournament and the Central Jersey Group IV Tournament, entered with just one loss. Austin Witter '09 of WWPS scored 20 points, but was held to just four boards and blocked just two shots. Markese Tucker '10 led TCA with 16 points, while Reggie Coleman '09 (14 points), Dondre Whitmore '09 (13 points), Khalid Lewis El '11 (13 points), and Daquan Basnight '09 (11 points) all tallied double-digit point totals for TCA.

- I was interviewed recently by a St. Joseph's junior, Pete Spiewak, regarding the three St. Joe's-bound ballers from the Garden State, so that he could have some quotes for his article in The Hawk, the student paper at the school. Pete is a good guy who knows his hoops, especially relating to St. Joe's. Click here to view the article.
