by Alex Schwartz

The last day of the 2009 Prime Time Shootout is about to begin with a game pitting a New Jersey private school against a Garden State public school. The Red Raiders of The Pennington School (NJ) are having their best season in recent memory, and are led by Harold Spears '10, Dontae Johnson '10, Chandler Fraser-Pauls '11, and Anthony Gaffney '11. Montgomery (NJ) is a squad that has found its groove of late and features players such as James Loupos '10 and Ryan McCoy '11. We're about 3:30 away from the tip.

10:36am- We're through three minutes of play, and The Pennington School has a 6-5 lead.

10:39am- With 3:00 to go in the quarter, Pennington is up 9-7. Harold Spears '10 has hit two threes and has all nine of the Red Raiders' points.

10:44am- A Montgomery three with about 10 seconds left in the first quarter was the last bucket of the period, and it's not 14-10 Pennington. Harold Spears has 12 points for the Red Raiders.

10:47am- Two free throws by James Loupos '10 and a bucket from Ryan McCoy '11 have tied this game at 14 about a minute into the second quarter.

10:50am- Chandler Fraser-Pauls '11 hit one of two at the line, and then Matt Mignon '11 hit a trey to put Montgomery up, but Fraser-Pauls responded with a triple, making it 18-17 Red Raiders.

10:52am- After a bucket put the Cougars up by a point, Oliver Murphy '11 drained a three for Pennington to put his squad up 21-19 with under four minutes to go in the half.

10:57am- After falling behind by two on a Misha Miljanic '09 bucket, the Red Raiders re-gained the lead when Murphy hit a three. The Cougars then scored to tie it up. Montgomery is grabbing offensive boards left and right.

10:59am- We're through 16 minutes of play, and Pennington holds a 28-27 lead. After allowing Spears to scored 12 points in the first quarter, the Cougars shut him out in the second.

11:10am- After a steal by Murphy, Anthony Gaffney '11 scored just nine seconds into the half to make it 30-27, but the Cougars quickly answered, so it's a one-point game again.

11:13am- With 6:07 to go in the third quarter, the Red Raiders are up 34-29.

11:14am- It's 37-29 Pennington after a three by Fraser-Pauls.

11:18am- It's 38-31 Red Raiders with under four minutes to go in the quarter. Both Loupos of Montgomery and Fraser-Pauls of Pennington have three fouls.

11:19am- A deuce by Gaffney has given Pennington its biggest lead of the game, nine points.

11:23am- Two free throws by Fraser-Pauls gave the Red Raiders a double-digit lead, 42-31, but Montgomery quickly answered. The sophomore then picked up his fourth foul with under 45 seconds left in the quarter.

11:24am- Ryan McCoy scored with about three seconds left in the quarter, so the Cougars will trail 42-35 entering the final period of play.

11:28am- Montgomery has taken a timeout with 6:23 to go in the game, trailing 47-39. The Cougars continue to dominate on the glass, but have been sloppy with the ball this half.

11:31am- After picking up his fourth foul—Spears scored an old-fashioned three points—McCoy hit a trey to make it 50-42.

11:36am- A Loupos three has cut the deficit to seven, 56-49, with about 2:30 to play.

11:39am- Pennington is up 58-52 after a three by Loupos that cut the deficit from nine to six. We've got 1:23 to in regulation.

11:46am- Pennington has won 61-56.

11:47am- James Loupos was named MVP for Montgomery, scoring 13 points. Harold Spears scored 26 points en route to winning the MVP trophy for Pennington.

3:24pm- I spoke with Harold Spears just now, well after the game ended.
