The second contest of the day has already begun, and it pits a national power against a contender for a New Jersey state title. The Royals of Christ the King (NY) are one of the top teams in America, and are led by Sean Johnson '09, Corey Edwards '11, Dominykas Milka '10, and Maurice Barrow '10, amongst others. As for the Elizabeth (NJ) Minutemen, Latif Rivers '09, James Frazier '09, and Pitt-bound (football) Raymond Graham '09 lead the way. I'll get you caught up on the action.
12:20pm- With 6:15 to go in the second quarter, Elizabeth is up 18-12.
12:28pm- The clock is showing 1:55 to play in the first half, and the Minutemen hold a 29-24 lead.
12:31pm- After two Elizabeth free throws, Maurice Barrow '10 scored on a tip-in to make it 31-26.
12:32pm- Both teams had a number of chances in the final minute, but could not convert. Elizabeth leads 31-26 entering the break.
12:44pm- James Frazier '09 knocked down a three to open the second half's scoring. Sean Johnson '09 answered with a deuce. The Minutemen are up 34-28.
12:45pm- Sean Johnson is almost single-handedly keeping CTK in this one. He drained a trey to cut the lead to three, but Frazier answered with a trifecta of his own.
12:47pm- A Latif Rivers '09 three has made it 40-33 Elizabeth.
12:48pm- Johnson received an inbounds pass under the Elizabeth basket, shot, missed, got his own board, and scored. The Minutemen then knocked down a trey and Dominykas Milka '10 scored a deuce for CTK. It's 45-37 in favor of the Garden State team.
12:51pm- Sean Johnson is absolutely lighting it up. He hit a three, then Elizabeth scored on a monster dunk by Kevin Brown '09. Johnson then knocked down another triple and scored a deuce.
12:52pm- A dunk by Maurice Barrow tied the game, and then Rivers and Johnson exchanged buckets to make it 49-49.
12:53pm- Kareem Thomas '09 knocked down a trey to put CTK ahead 52-49. The Royals are on a 19-9 run.
12:55pm- Johnson got a steal near halfcourt, took a few dribble an lobbed it to Barrow for an alley-oop slam. Elizabeth then scored a bucket and CTK hit a three to take a 57-51 lead.
12:56pm- The third quarter has come to an end, and Christ the King is up 57-53. In a fast-paced, high scoring quarter, the Royals outscored the Minutemen 31-22.
12:59pm- A Sean Johnson bucket has made it 59-53 CTK.
1:00pm- It's now 59-56 CTK with six minutes to play.
1:01pm- A bucket by Corey Edwards '11 along with a trey and a deuce by Thomas have made it a 10-point game. The Minutemen have called a timeout with 5:12 to go, trailing 66-56.
1:03pm- Raymond Graham '09, who has been pretty quiet for the most part today, scored after getting an offensive board, bring the deficit back down to single digits.
1:04pm- An old-fashioned three points from Kevin Brown have made this a 66-61 game.
1:07pm- A triple by Johnson has made it 70-61 with 3:12 to go.
1:12pm- With 90 seconds to go in regulation, CTK is up 72-63.
1:13pm- James Frazier has made it a seven-point game, 72-65.
1:15pm- Johnson missed a dunk, but Barrow got the board and was fouled. The junior missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Elizabeth couldn't take advantage at the other end.
1:16pm- Milka hit a couple of free throws with 40 seconds left, and Graham then scored for the Minutemen, who took a timeout with 31 seconds remaining, trailing 74-67.
1:20pm- Rivers hit a three with about 24 seconds left to make it a four-point game. Milka then went to the line with 13.7 to go, and hit the second of two shots, making it 75-70.
1:21pm- Frazier nailed a trey for Elizabeth to make it 75-73, and then Johnson was fouled with the clock showing 1.8, and the senior guard hit the second of two shots.
1:22pm- Rivers threw up an off-balance shot from halfcourt as time expired and it hit near the center of the backboard, but was too strong, going over the rim on the bounce.
1:23pm- Christ the King has the 76-73 pm.
1:24pm- Kevin Brown of Elizabeth was named MVP, scoring 21 points. For Christ the King, the honoree was Sean Johnson, who had 38 points.
